Every now and then when i'm in manual mode i down shift to slow me down. for some reason i feel like it's bad for an AT. i don't red line it when i'm downshifting or anything but it just doesn't feel right.

is it hard on an AT to downshift to slow you down? any info on this would be GREEEEAT! i don't want to see my transmission in the rear view mirror.

i do it all the time...great for saving on brakes! since the G has manumatic control of the automatic built into the powertrain software...i doubt you'd cause any undue harm by using that feature. the electronic nannies will keep you from exploding anything!

Even with a manual you wouldn't want to do an engine break at HIGH revs. I too do it all the time and have had no problems. If you were to try and go from 4th to 2nd, as you would find out, the shifter would not let you go past third until it has completely gone into that gear. Kind of sucks when you want to come out of a corner fast. But it is to keep a novice from doing harm to the motor.

transmission costs alot more than brakes do, why risk it?

The manumatic mode won't let you shift in a way that's going to harm the engine or transmission. I've heard that many times directly from the mouth of an Infiniti master tech I worked with a few years ago. He's been with Infiniti for as long as they've existed, so I know his word is good. Downshifting to slow you down will do no harm. If it would do any harm, it would say not to do it in your owners manual.

I too downshift my AT all the time to slow the car. Infiniti tech told me with the trans software you can't hurt it. Plus.... i love the sound of that thing coming down the offramp.

I also do it often. 70k miles later and no issues with the trans.

To add to this old thread...The 07 ATs actually downshift when you're braking to help you slow down, so I don't think you'll have any issues.
