Is cd changer also radio ECU, want to replace with HU

I am looking to remove the cd changer and make a custom face plate, maybe modify existing wood grain one, to fit a single or double din unit where the cd changer is. Current stereo is toast but I want to keep nav and car controls.

Is the CD changer brains also the headunit brains? Can I remove just the cd changer and fit a single din unit into that area? Maybe a double din but I think I need to keep the volume button to access some features of the oem radio. Otherwise I would remove that too

there's a sticky or faq somewhere. basically pull your cupholder out, remove the seat heater controls, remove the shifter knob, lift panel around shifter, remove two more screws and the faceplate pops out.
