I just reluctantly had the a/c compressor replaced (2nd time) on mine. $200+ for the part I brought a few months ago to stagger off the entire job cost. And then $400+ for the labor to install. I was going to do half of it myself, but when I went to disconnect the line, there was still a lot of charge and oil in the system even though the refrigerant wasn’t enough to click the compressor.
A/C is a must in a hot and rainy area, even driving down the street the windows will fog up in rain, or it’ll be so hot that within 20 minutes I’m drenched. So I went ahead with it, but I would have been happier if I could have just replaced the compressor myself and only went in for the recharge.
Now my front struts are worn down and can’t find replacements yet. It’s like I feel stupid in some ways to keep it up, but I’ve done enough work to where it drives so well. Hate to drop a car over shock absorbers lol. But it’s funny that my Nissan maxima has been virtually expensive-maintenance free (most times if I did get big estimates, it was typical tie rod stuff, with motor mounts and rack and pinion being the biggest expenses), even with me behind on repairs. The rear shocks are old, but not blown. The compressor is noisy but still blows cold. Suspension and shocks are easily found. They just really made that one, much more solid and accessible.
I don’t regret getting the Q at all, but the QX4 or i30 probably would have been more accessible (except I don’t like i30s as much as most I’ve seen are horribly neglected and QX4/4Runners aren’t let go so easily). Except when I brought it in 2017…it was still in the market fairly often. Seems Covid supply chain had done something to f*** up part availability, and that I didn’t foresee.
I’ll likely hold onto it until I relocate to my next destination and then see if I can get a decent price from it. Carvana offered me $100 towards a trade, which is f*** comical but not even funny.
Right now I live in a place where everyone drives American cars and big pickup trucks. So I can pick up that the mechanics don’t seem too interested in helping me keep it up unless I chase them down and they think I’m crazy or something lol. But at the end of the day, I’ve seen way older cars on the road or in a rougher shape. Plus I don’t have a work commute, and mainly use it for highway rides.
