I don't know if any body watches TRUCKS on spike, but they have an interesting project going on a B2200. They swapped the IRS from on 03/04 cobra into the rear of the truck+a SC mod motor. I'm sure the thing will be beast when it's done seeing as how they are on a TV budget!

It got me thinking about swapping the IRS from a 240 into my hardbody. The way they showed it doesn't make it look all that difficult, and I'm all for crazy and unique projects. I imagine it would make the HB handle like a dream.

Anybody know if it has been done before. I know I've seen an old Mazda truck with an IRS swap in some magazine before but can't find any info on it.

It seems like I saw pics of a partly finished rear strut setup, maybe here on nico. You could do that in the rear and do mustang coilovers in the front. I wonder how Garage Miniz did their drift trucks?

Even with the IRS, it seems the truck will have less torsional rigidity than the donor car. There is a thread in here from a while back with a VG30DETT and IRS swapped D21, I think it is in the pictures sticky, too.

A 240 or any Z with the IRS could do measure some at a junk yard look at mounting points. I would say beefing up the frame with a cross member or 2 and just adding in mounting points by welding and it could work. D21 has 2 piece drive shaft so keeping angles correct are easirer and making longer or shorter shaft is easier. if you can measure and weld it would be much cheaper but a good fab shop can do almost anything. I posted here once I would love to get a donor 350 or 370 new Z and put rear end 6 speed transmission and V6 in mine, 300 hp D21 with no turbo crap and 6 speed and IRS would be a hell of a truck. I love a Normally aspirated 300hp stock V6 would be awesome. Add some weight in bed for traction and off you go. If only i had the money

the ex-editor of Minitruckin' Mike Alexander had a mini that was set up with IRS in the rear. He had complete tubular suspension, air bag set-up, the whole 9 yards. If anyone has a collection of minitruckin' mags from about 2 years ago, there's prolly some pics in there. That's where I seen it

My 86.5 2wd std cab had one, but my 97 4x4 std cab has a one-piece.

If I were you I'd start with a J30 or Q45 already LSD and basically the same suspension I picked up an entire J30 rear suspension for $250 with only 70k miles on it but I used the spindles and diff outta it for a 240sx

Q45 is much beefier if you wanted to put a v8 or something all you really need is to figure out the geometry of the rear shock tower and copy it angles hieght etc and it would be really easy.

and if I went through all that work I'd do the front as well it would be not at all harder and make it actually really handle well plus matching lug patterns.

There was a thread on here that I started Just a Hardbody about a year ago. I also have one on Tampa racing.com Just a Hardbody . We have a 97 Hardbody with a 1996 VQ30 t-70 turbo,350Z 6speed transmission, right hand drive and a full 240sx suspension front and rear. the rear struts have been placed through the bed of the truck. It can be done with a lot of bracing you have to cut the rear of the frame so the upper control arm has room for movement.
