I posted this in the 240sx forum, but i figured i'd get a better response here:
Let me describe the noise first. It sounds as though a circular rotating metal object is making partial contact with another metal object only at certain intervals in it's rotation, making a metal on metal squeal that changes frequency depending on speed and amount of steering angle to the right.
Now, I want to say that this noise occurs from the front right wheel whenever i turn right, however the truth is that this isnt the case. If the car is driven straight for a while and then even if the slightest rightward steering input is given, the noise will occur from the front right (passenger's side) wheel. However, if the wheel is jerked hard right, the noise dissappears, even if the car is turning right, as long as the steering wheel is not turned to or over the point to which it was jerked. After this, if the car is driven straight again for some time, the car will make the noise when slight right steering input is applied.
If the car is turned left, then the noise returns even when the car is going straight, however jerking the wheel right will make the car go straight noiselessly, indefinately (until the car is turned right or left and then straight).
The noise seems to have gotten worse since i installed coilovers two days ago. I can hear the noise even with the windows up, as if it's being transmitted through the frame to the cabin. However, there is no vibration under braking although the noise sometimes gets worse while braking and turning right.
I suspected a wheel bearing originally, but it doesnt make sense that if you jerk the wheel hard, the noise goes away. I feel like something is rubbing but i can't quite put my finger on what would do this. If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know. Thank you for your time.
