I have a 91, the idle occasionally jumps around. drops to about 100-200 and then up to 1200. I have checked vaccume lines and they are all intact. new plugs and wires msd ignit and coil. what would cause this? It dosent do it all the time.

I bet it's the MAF. Intermittent connection from being loose and/or corroded. It's becoming a very common problem on Nissans and Infinitis from the early '90s.

do you think the MAF itself is bad or just the connections need to be cleaned

Just the connection. 5 minute job so long as you don't drop the little clip down into the engine bay.

Heh, I warned you! Go to a hobby shop...they usually sell piano wire--thin steel wire in varying thicknesses. Get one about the same size and you can make your own clips with a set of pliers and cutter.

It takes some practice. Learning the proper techniques and tricks, in addition to figuring out which tools work best. I push on the open end of the clip with a small screwdriver to get it off the connector, then I use dental pick to get under ther and press it against my finger while I finagel it off. Also I have a magnetic pick-up tool right there in case I think I'm going to lose it, so I can try to keep it from going far. The MAF clip is tricker than most, since it grabs on to all sides of the connector. Can't be understated really. Clip removal and replacement can take 10 seconds, but looking for a lost clipped can take 15 minutes without actually finding it. Same thing with small screws and bolts.
