The owner of Heart Attack Grill dies at an early age of 29.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Heart Attack Grill is closed.

The Chandler restaurant that got national attention for its calorie-laden fare and waitresses dressed in provocative nurse outfits closed without any announcement about two weeks ago, said Greg Stanfield, owner of the nearby Regal Beagle bar.

Although a sign on the grill's door and a notice on the website say the restaurant is undergoing remodeling, efforts to reach the owner, Jon Basso, were unsuccessful. The business' phone is disconnected; so is the number listed for Basso's Carefree home.

The door sign and website notice say the restaurant will reopen June 15 and that it is "having challenges with the city over our building's exterior color." The building is red and white; the rest of the strip shopping center once anchored by a now-vacant Bashas' grocery store is tan.

Chandler building inspector Mike DeWys said his office received an anonymous complaint about alleged construction activity at the site at 6185 W. Chandler Boulevard a short time ago. An inspector sent to the location found evidence of painting, he said, and the inspector's report notes "issue of building color and landscaping have not been resolved." There is no record in city files that Heart Attack Grill has building permits for remodeling or that the city issued any citations for unpermitted construction activity.

Stanfield said Heart Attack Grill customers and employees were regular patrons at his Regal Beagle, and he was under the impression that the closure is permanent.

The news comes two months after the sudden death of Heart Attack Grill's 575-pound spokesman, Blair River. Just 29, River was the face - and body - of the unabashedly unhealthy restaurant that featured burgers with names like the Quadruple Bypass Burger - a sandwich with four beef patties - and French fries cooked it lard. Anyone who weighed more than 350 pounds got a free meal, but they had to step on the restaurant's scale to prove it.

Following River's death in March, Basso vowed to keep the restaurant open and pay tribute to his friend without changing the menu or toning down the glorification of obesity. The cause of River's death was not released but friends said he developed pneumonia after contracting the flu.

Chandler City Councilman Jeff Weninger, who owns several small restaurants, said the recession has been tough dining establishments and the negative publicity from River's death has likely hurt the Heart Attack Grill.

"These are tough times and this is a really tough business. Just when you start thinking you're going to come out on the other side, all of a sudden your purveyor raises prices," the councilman said.

it's ok, the majority of people have no idea what irony is, ask Alanis Morissette she had no clue either.

Gross.

I don't feel the slightest bit of sorrow over this guy's death. A fat f*** dies?! No way! People over 350 get free meals? How about the homeless folks that weigh two hundred pounds less, where is their free meal?

Would you rather we hate them for not knowing how to write in their own language? Maybe they're fat because they get depressed when trolling forums and then eat tons of fried chicken...

Yea, pretty much. A little overweight is one thing. Being that obese is downright disgusting. And the "glorification of obesity" makes me want to vomit.

Hey, that was a good song! But jokes aside, at least this will be a fair warning for the regulars at that restaurant, if the name wasn’t enough to alert them

Let's just mandate BMI by law and force anyone who does not meet some arbitrary scale to perform forced manual labor. That way maybe you can like America again

As long as the fatties don't expect me to dance around the fact that they have eaten themselves into their situation, fine. You take up two seats, pay for two seats. You can't fit behind the wheel of your car GTFO the road. You die with a hot wing still lodged in your throat expect me to giggle my a** off. Do what you want to do to yourself, but don't expect me to care.

I'm all for doing what you want; if that includes eating yourself to bad health, so be it. I just hate to see people get to the point where they can't get up out of bed / go to the bathroom / breathe while walking across a room, etc. because of it. As for the restaurant, no one holds a gun to people's heads to eat there. It's a personal choice.

And when people are so morbidly obese that they actually can no longer sustain employment, get on Medicaid and public assistance and start racking up the hospital bills saying "charge it to the taxpayers", then doesn't it become a public issue?

As much as I don't like the idea of nanny-laws, I believe that, in many cases, obesity is cause by a sickness and it would more cost-effective (and humane) to try to cure the sickness than to treat the symptoms. I don't blame the restaurant industry for wanting to make money, but some of the marketing that's out there is borderline predatory (and there's nothing on that advertising that requires them to put a disclaimer like they do when alchohol or gamb|ing is involved).

Actually, crappy, unhealthy food is way less expensive than healthy food. So the less money someone has the more likely they are to get (or remain) fat. Until such time as they are literally starving to death.

I eat junk food on Fridays, in my house we called it "junk food day".

So, early in the morning I have the steak and cheese breakfast with coke...others in my family have the pancakes...and after 10 to 15 minutes some of us have to go to the bathroom and relieve pounds of sh*t...

Those MacDonalds breakfasts are our laxatives, contrary to others who get fat with such a junk.

We eat junk food on Fridays because we must eat this kind of food in case an emergency -like a local or regional disaster- we will survive eating such a sh*t food and won't die. The rest of days of the week we eat beans, meat, chicken, vegetables, fruits, milk, fruit juices, etc...not organic -because we are not so fanatic- but still we are picky about what we eat...

Of course, junk food is cheaper than cooking at home good healthy food, but if you have a buffet restaurant close to your place, almost for the same 7 bucks you spend in a junk food meal, in these restaurants you can eat good food, including fruits...

A head of lettuce costs less than a bag of potato chips.

Dunno why I just thought of this, but could you imagine going Hasselhoff on a head of lettuce instead of junk food?
I wonder what it would be like if/when you puke it back up.

You know, I fully understand your point and I don't necessarily disagree. Yet, in most cases there is more to obesity than just someone shoveling food down their throat. Unfortunately, I'm a good example as I'm appx 60lbs heavier than I want to be and the majority was caused due to physical issues which kept me from being as active as normal for years.....and due to gaining almost 28lbs when I quit smoking. My wife can eat 2x what I do and lose weight where I can just smell her food and gain.

Then you have the whole genetics thing......
