Iridium plugs last a very long time. Typical life spans for plats run about 30k-60k. My sister's 2k corolla uses iridiums and they're good for 100k (Denso). My 24E uses NGK iridiums and they're still very good and have been spec'ed at 100k as well. They will also resist fouling unlike platinums when exposed to nitrous.
Supposedly, they're supposed to produce a better spark (which is very plausable since the smaller surface area will result in a lower voltage at which air breaks down which causes the air to breakdown between the electrodes) and puts less stress on the ignition system. Additionally, they last longer and can take more stressful engine situations versus platinums. I've got em, and love em. I plan on switching from NGK to Denso for my SR however, as they're widely available for Denso and have also had very good experiences with them in a wide variety of cars I've used them on.
