ipod vs 2008 m35

i am having troubles with a new ipod 5th gen and my 2008 m
got the ipod for xmas i ordered the cable connector from infiniti 284h2-1baob it worked fine on a drive a week ago.

i tried to use ipod again last saturday and the ipod screen says "accessory connected" and does not allow song selection etc when connected to the car
i was able to move around within the album previously selected with steering wheel controls but that is it.

any ideas i called apple and they rolled over on infiniti
