I just bout a 2016 SV w/ the SV premium package this weekend.
I feel like I'm missing something super obvious. Via bluetooth, everything seems to work as one would expect.
When tethered through the aux port, I can go through the menus and lists on the car screen. But I can't... find... the play button? I have to pick up the phone just to hit play?

You're not missing anything. The aux setting basically acts as a pass through to the speakers, just like if you took a head phone jack and plugged a pair of computer speakers in. There is no two way communication for play/pause or other controls other than whats on your phone. Every car with an aux jack works the same way as far as I'm aware.

I did read the manual. It's silent on the issue.
That said, it's 'fixed'. The issue was not on the car's end. I had to do a reset on my phone due to a separate issue, which coincidentally fixed this one as well.
It now works just like you'd expect it to.
