Looking to pickup a 80gb IPOD Classic to use with the interface but before I do I wanted to see if anyone else was using it and what they thought of it. Also does it provide power to the ipod?

I have an 80gb Classic, it works well with the Interface. Also provides power, near as I can tell.

Only thing I don't like with the implementation of the iPod interface is, scrolling to find a song/artist can take a LONG time if you have lots of songs/artists.

Will the car play videos from the iPod through the iPod interface, or do you have to connect it via RCA cables?

I do not have a first hand experience but it's my understanding that you have to use the rca cables. videos will not play through the default ipod connection.

I got an 80gb classic yesterday and have hooked it up. It works pretty good and does power the iPod. A couple of interesting things I noticed are that you can't turn on/off shuffle or repeat through the interface so you have to disconnect the iPod, make the change, then reconnect it. No videos will play through the interface, so you will have to get the video adapter and connect it through the RCA inputs if you want to watch video. It also doesn't power down the iPod when you turn off the car, but I think it might shut off automatically after a while (I'm not sure). It doesn't pause when you use the telephone, just keeps on playing (although you can't hear it). I am sure there are other quirks, but I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet. Overall, I think it is nice especially if you have a really huge music collection you want to carry around. If you can fit what you want onto the car's music box, I don't know if the iPod is worth the money. You don't get that much more functionality.

Oh it's definately worth it for two main reasons.

1. 9Gb vs 80Gb, easy math2. Full search while driving

There's also ease of loading songs, I transfered my entire collection 50Gb in less time then it took to load 8 CDs. There's also sound quality, I'm not sure what the sample rate MB uses but I bet it's 128Kbp. Many of my MP3's are 160 or greater. The IPOD interace is easily the best option. Granted there are some things they could have done to make it awesome like video but really how often do you watch video's while driving...lol. Still it would have been nice to have for passengers.. but you know the driver would look as well.MB does have one very cool feature and that's auto classification of mood when you rip using the service provided. Kind of nice to select relaxing or lively music and it will play from your entire colection based on the songs classification. I take it that service requires a XM service.. not sure. Although since the car supports IPOD playlists you can create the same feature on the IPOD interface.

This is where it becomes necessary to have a couple of playlists assembled.

As I said above, if you have a ton of music then the iPod is definitely your best bet. If you will never have 9GB of music anyway, then it is probably not worth the money to get the iPod. I can't maneuver around my iPod songs any better than I can on the Music Box. You don't have full search on the iPod, just the ability to sort by song, artist, genre, album, etc. which is basically what you can do with the Music Box. As far as sound quality goes, I can't tell the difference between the songs ripped on the Music Box and the songs on my iPod. I can't even tell the difference between the original CD and the song once it has been ripped onto the Music Box. If you are that much of an audiophile, you aren't going to be happy with mp3s at all anyway.

Bottom line is, if you have a ton of music, the iPod is the best solution.

Have you tried searching for artist, album ect. while the car is moving with Music box? You can't, its disabled as a safety feature. This is why it's virtually unusalbe for me. By fiull search I mean't artist, album ect... and you can do this while the car is moving with the IPOD... that's a major difference.

If your's is working while your moving then perhaps it's a difference in the software, newer G's will have the search on music box disabled.. You can only search by mood.

You can browse artists, albums, etc on the Music Box while moving by simply turning the folder knob. That's all you can do on the iPod as well. You can't actually type in names of artists or albums.

The math is very easy for me - I will never spend enough time sitting in my car to worry if I will listen to 9Gb of music, much less 80Gb - especially when I also have so many XM channels to listen to.

That's right I forgot about the knob, I'm use to using the steering wheel controls where it is disabled on music box, but not IPOD.

9Gb doesn't sound like much but you can put a hell of alot of music on there so for some the music box will be a viable choice.

If you've got a big collection though, and want any song in your library available at any time, $250 is a cheap solution. 6 disk changers use to cost more and this one you can take out of the car and bring it with you.

One thing that I noticed when comparing sound quality of the ipod interface versus the hard drive is that music on the hard drive (and FM/XM) seems louder than from the ipod. I use both though.

And other question is there any kind of adapter for ipod that you can connect it to the ipod and get video out for the screen? Thanks for any input.

Yes, the iPod controls support playlists.

Yes, there is an adapter from Apple that has RCA composite outputs which you can connect to the auxiliary inputs in the armrest to show video from the iPod. You can only see the video when the car is in Park with the parking brake engaged, though.

I'm getting an Ipod just for the car. Anybody know what the effect would be on the Ipod when the temperature drops below freezing?

I live just outside Boston, and my iPod Nano has "frozen" up on my twice this month. Both times it was cold out (below freezing), but surprisingly it wasn't the coldest of days. Typical of Apple, no instructions on how to reset my Nano, but google found that switching hold on then off, then pressing and holding both center button and upper center part of "wheel" for several seconds did a soft reset. Without that I would have probably had to wait 2 weeks until the battery completely drained before using the Apple junker again.

I leave the Nano in the G37 24x7, but I park in an attached garage at night so others in Boston might have their iPod seeing colder temps.

Have to disagree with you on this. All iPods may have to be reset at one time or another - and it isn't due to cold temperatures. And if you had read instructions you would have known how to reset it. Don't blame Apple for your stupidity. And if you think Apple is so bad, why did you buy their product? DOH?

Sad to see a fellow G37S owner spewing such vitriolic text.

All MP3 players may have to be reset, but my first MP3 player I had about 4 years before Apple created their first iPod has an obvious reset button on it, so no need to go through hoops or google or manuals like with the Apple.

And if you thought for about 1 second you might be able to answer your own question on why I bought the Apple ... I bought an Apple because it's the only MP3 player interface that Infiniti fully supports.

Anyway, this is all off topic... As I stated originally, I've had an original iPod Nano in my G37 in below freezing temps and it seems to usually function fine, but the Nano does lock up from time to time, possibly having nothing to do with the temperature, but I've used it for 3 years before keeping it in the cold and it never locked up on me then. I've also dozens of other LiION-powered devices some of which would not power up at all when left in the extreme cold for long. YMMV, as may your love for Apple products. At least here I hope we both agree we love the G37S!

Note that when you switch away from the ipod the system pauses it. So to watch video from the ipod you have to disconnect it from the dock connector, then pick the video you want to watch, switch to the aux input, connect up a video/audio cable, then play and control the video from the ipod itself.

So you can't connect up a video ipod to the dock connector and the aux input and control the video playback on the aux input screen. Sort of sux, if you ask me, but that is how it is designed.

It would have been nice to have a alphabet touch screen for the ipod (and music box) to find songs/artists.

Does anyone know if it is possible to disable the feature preventing video playback while in Drive? This would be awesome the enable - legal or not!

Thanks,Texas G Man

Yes. It is possible. I had it done by an outfit in South Florida. It is awsome. Also, all of the greyed out navigation works while moving as well. I don't know how they did it but it took less than 30 minutes and I strongly recommend it. They installed a toggle switch and you have to switch back to regular position every now and again when using navigation because the car thinks it is standing still otherwise.
