ipod in the S model

I love my Versa (hatchback) S model. But I am finally buying an iPod and have heard terrible things about using an FM transmitter in the Los Angeles area to transfer the content to a car stereo. The FM band is so full, it's hard to find an empty station slot and there is often interference.

Short of getting a whole new radio unit (I like the look of this one, and it's just fine for me in every way short of plugging in the iPod) has anyone found a way to hardwire an ipod into the radio system. Hopefully, somewhere in the back. Idealy, it would be with a line that can be fed into the glove compartment or elsewhere out of the way when not in use.

It might not be possible, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks,

David

I should clarify one thing - I only really care about playing the iPod through the current radio. I am happy to control the iPod on the device, itself. So, I just need some kind of AUX input.

Not sure if this would even work in your Versa, but...

Your best bet will probably be one of the FM converter things...you plug it into your ipod and your cigarette lighter and it transmits on an FM frequency of your choice. I have one for traveling and in other peoples cars and it works great

I have that FM transmitter problem myself. I did find a good one online though. http://www.geeks.com

My experiences with the more expensive models were poor so i took a chance and bought a cheaper one and it works great. Even though i have the Aux jack, i use the transmitter.

Thanks for the tip about geeks.com -

They have 3 FM transmitters: iriver, belkin and a third kind with no manufacturer name. The iriver is about $15, the other two are about $35.

Do you know which of the 3 you have?

Thanks.

I've had TERRIBLE luck with FM transmitters.

I ended up buying an extention to run from the iPod phone out to the transmitter so I could put it in my back window (where the FM antenna is), and even THAT didn't lead to decent sound.

I haven't dared spend money on the expensive ones because I don't see why they should be any better: they're all about the same size and have the same voltage power source and no room for a decent size transmitter antenna.

Sort of makes me miss my old cassette deck...at least with that I could use a cassette adapter and get fairly decent sound.

I've used the Belkin one and it's garbage. The iRiver one works perfectly for me, though I was able to find a station that didn't have anything. The iRiver one can change the station in increments of .1 or .2, and betweek around 80 to 120, so you should be able to find at least one that works...

The Belkin might not be the best solution, but the company has a neat web site feature:

If you go to http://www.belkin.com/mybestfm and enter your zip code, will be give you the clearest spots on the FM dial to try. (At least that's what it's supposed to do).

That looks like a useful website for US people. But remember you don't need to buy a Belkin to use their site... just get another one (like the iRiver) and just use the frequency that Belkin's website gave you

Will a Sirius radio FM Relay work? You'll have to wait for the adapters for our vehicles first but will be a good option. Will have to hook it up to something with a FM transmitter built into it though.

Check with your local Stereo shop they should have a inline cable fm modulator to run through the antenna slot, fm transmitters are not worth the trouble, but for the best ipod connection I would buy an SL radio or an aftermarket one with ipod controller built in..

heres a pic of a modulator
