Maybe I'm just a snob for not being satisfied with the auxiliary port, but I'm lazy and want to control my iPod with the stereo controls. From what I've seen, there are no aftermarket head units that will work with the steering wheel controls, so I don't want to go that route. That leaves me trying to find something that will work with the existing stereo.

So, with that in mind, here's my question. Does Nissan use this same stereo in any other models where I might have better luck finding an adapter?

On a similar note, if I do find an adapter, does anyone know how to install it? It would be ideal if there's a way to get the iPod cable to come in the back of the cubbie hole on top of the head unit.

thanks

maybe I can put it a different way. I've seen the adapter that you listed (thanks, btw), but I just don't see paying that much for it. For 10 bux more, I can have the dealer do it. Has anyone else tried to adapt the radio for their ipod yet? Or, does anyone have an details about the radio, like what the back hookups look like?

The reason I'm being a pain about this is that I really don't want to pay that much when I could probably find something for less than half that price. That's why I'm curious if this same head unit is used in any other models where I could get a wider search base to find a better deal.

Sorry dude, that's the adapter the factory uses for several models. Most people here would tell you just to switch your head unit.

I seriously considered it, but I'd hate to do it only to have some buttons on my steering wheel going to waste. Maybe I'll just deal with it until the price comes down, or until the aftermarket guys step up to the plate.

(just incase that was confusing...)

OK, so here's a followup question, that may be off topic, but relevant. I talked to my dealer the other day to find out what it would cost for him to install the adapter. He said the adapter was $235 and install is $125. Since it looks like everyone has it for around the same price, is there any room for negotiation on the install price? Or, if I bought it, would this be something I could do myself without frying anything?

I'll defer to a guru... but really, it should be plug and play, they are probably charging you for labor in taking the console apart... ask them what they would charge if you did the dismantle and re-mantle... it's really easy to get that bugger open. (that is, if you don't feel comfortable hooking the thing up yourself)

+1 Totally agreed. The aux in distorts something fierce, so much so that I went and started burning cds from my iTunes library to play in the car...I hate only getting 6 discs in there...

So I take it that the bluetooth circuit is in the factory stereo too?

I guess the Bancroft Accessories adapter is the only way to go on that then...I visited my local audio pimp/pusher and they coulding even find a compatible mix amongst like 8 vendors...unless of course this particular headunit is used in another model as you'd mentioned...USA Spec never got back to me either and I really don't want to lose capability by putting an aftermarket piece in...or at least be redundant there at best....

Have you tried adjusting the output level (down) from your mp3 player? My daughter uses two different players going into my aux port, and they sound great!

I'm more of an audiophile...which is sort of a joke since I'm rocking compressed audio...however, the Griffin tuneport aux that I'm using has a two position click switch, and most likely a crappy preamp internally...so anyways in the high output position, it distorts like a mofo, but in the lower output position I hear a high pitched whine through the speakers in between songs when the engine is at hiway speed...keep in mind in my previous Xterra, I had an alpine deck with the highspeed dock cable...so I'm used to pristine audio being piped in...with regards to the cds, all my stuff is highbitrate 192kbps+ or VBR so I'm not fitting 10 albums + on a disc...and the cd changer is slow as fignuts when shuffling the whole jam...

Anybody know how that Bancroft piece works...ie does it cause a bottleneck and move slow as molasses? That's something that's plagued the general populace of the ipod ready radios, the new pioneers, alpines, and mostly the kenwoods roll **** fast as hell now...is this comparable? Thanks!

J.

Here's one for 30 bucks. I don't know if it will work but it has a similar part number.

That's an extension cable...it's not the harness/adapter that we're looking to get...

As an aside....Bancroft should be faxing me a copy of the instructions...I'll see if I can't post them here so we can at least get an idea on the install...

The instructions would be great! One concern that I have is that I'd love to have the iPod in the storage spot above the radio instead of in the glovebox like the picture shows. Thanks for looking into this.

In my previous Nissan (Xterra) I replaced the crap head unit with a Pioneer and then an Alpine w/ the FullSpeed connection...I had it run to the GloveBox but I was planning on drilling a hole in the pocket under the headunit to run the cable...so that certain could be done, but you're going to have to pull all that stuff out of the dash...more cumbersome than anything...This might be worth it if I don't need to drop some pay to an installer....the only thing I worry about is having to run leads for power...

Could you send them to me? I'm extremely lazy too, but I am looking for the cleanest look possible and don't like the idea of crowding my dash with another screen (unless I get a navi).

Dude...I sent your instructions over....delete your email so you don't get bot spammed!

I just scored the Belkin Ipod deal w/ the line out and it totally KILLS the Griffin...the griffin had a bad ground and picks up the engine....the belkin doesn't so I'm good for now...I still want to get the harness deal....I need to know somemore first...1) do the song titles show up on the headunit?2) how fast does it scroll thru stuff?

Otherwise another option might be the new HarmanKardon drive/play 2....my bud works for them and sent me some promo material on that thing...it looks cool....but it might be more cumbersome than it's worth...

Hey all.

Just an FYI: I just ordered the iPod adapter from the dealer this weekend, and it should be here by Wednesday, maybe Thursday. Anyhow, I'm going to try to do the install myself, so Orange, thanks for the instructions.

I'll take pics as I do this, so we'll see how this weekend goes.

I picked up the parts yesterday. I should be able to get to the work tomorrow. "How To" to follow.
