Good Day

My name is Dana, I'm a professional musician (Broadway show drummer) and commercial pilot from the North Shore of Boston. I've been driving modified cars for over 12 years, and most recently lost my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT to a highway accident. It was not my fault, and no injuries to either party. (I'm actually glad it happened, it was time to move on). I know that my GTI and Legacy NEEDED mods to perform, but I'm not a street racer. I'm a high-speed highway driver who spends 50,000 miles a year driving for my musical gigs.

I'm planning on purchasing a G37X in the near future, have some true beginner questions and will address them after examining the proper forums. However, being that I know NOTHING (and I mean NOTHING) about modifying a G37: Are there any "beginner" posts about intake, software, exhausts and so forth that would get me started with my research?

Thanks

Dana

P.S. Is the top speed really limited at around 145mph?
Can that limiter be bypassed easily?

Welcome to NICO and Infiniti! The G is a great car and really does not need many mods as it's a solid performer out of the box. However, there are always mods to make slight improvements...or big HP increases, if you have the $$ (FI). I'd recommend going with the R2C intake. I have had others, and this one is by far the best in terms or quality and performance. If you get a coupe, CAT-back exhausts can also free up some HP. Sedans have a different exhaust system. As for the ECU tuning, there is some power to be made from a re-flash, but its expensive and not worth it unless you have other mods in place. Finally, the top speed limiter...not sure. I thought it was only on Nissans...but I could be wrong.

It's 156mph, according to Car and Driver and others. Hypertech says its Max Energy Sport Power Programmer can lift the governor. I have not seen any posts on how to do it on a G37 without ECU programming, but historically there are solutions for many cars of installing a switch on the speed sensor line to the ECU.

Here's the best alternative I've seen posted (numbnuts240, June 2009):
step 1: buy lots of tennis balls, strike anywhere matches, gasoline.
step 2: slice tennis balls and stuff with matches.
step 3: soak balls in gasoline.
step 4: throw balls really hard at engine until it explodes.

same end result and you don't have to fear for your life
That one's followed by Papi Chulo's equally helpful post:
Preheat oven to 375°F.

2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 sticks (1 cup) butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons Kahlua Vanilla Rum
1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (optional)
3 small or 2 large eggs
2 cups chocolate chips or chunks
1 1/4 cup walnuts, pecans or Macadamia nuts, chopped
1/2 cup raisins, Craisins or dried cherries, chopped

Remove butter and eggs from refrigerator about 20 minutes before baking. Soak raisins, Craisins or dried cherries (or a combination of these) in 4 tablespoons of Kahlua Rum for 1 hour before using. After dried fruit have soaked up the rum, measure two tablespoons of rum/raisin liquid and reserve to add to cookie dough.

Beat together butter and the two kinds of sugar until creamy. Add one egg at a time, beating after each one is added. Stir in 2 tablespoons of vanilla rum and the bean paste.

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually pour flour mixture into the mixer bowl while mixing at the lowest speed. Mix only until combined; do not over-mix or the cookies will be tough.

Using a wooden spoon, stir in chocolate chips, chopped nuts and dried raisins/fruit.

then put thems in the ovens and cook untill your house burns down and you learn to search.
Seriously, search a bit and you'll find out more. I hope you're just asking hypothetically.

I assume that you are going to track it....
Assuming so, you may want to look into some springs/wheels/tires/upgrading the brakes.

Thank you for your responses.

Joe, those mods are exactly what I did to my GTI and the Legacy; intake, software, exhaust. Knowing that the Infiniti has 100 more HP than the other cars had made me wonder if it was necessary. Thanks for your equipment suggestions, I will research them.

Mudgen, thank you for that information, I hadn't found that C&D article, I'll search for it.
And, no, I wasn't kidding about the limiter.

Also, knowing that every forum comes complete with its very own "use-the-search-button" guy, I hadn't expected to meet him so soon. :chuckle:

Cobra, all those mods are the second stage of my research. Thanks.
And, no, I'm not planning on tracking it.

My first trip to the dealer is tomorrow.

Thanks again

Dana

Welcome

With some tunes you can take the limiter off. Also you can raise the RPM limit. But seeing the chart before with higher rpm you actually loosing hp so not really worth. Of course it is my opinion.

Good, you have a sense of humor. You'll like it around here. I couldn't resist using the cookie recipe response.

You can dodge the speed limiter with an ECU tune/flash, or figure out how to buy the canceler made by Young Motors (look for "g37 limit canceler" on Youtube). Or muck around with the sensor leads.

But please don't bring that sh** to Virginia highways. I spend about an hour a day on I-95, and I will most assuredly call 911 if someone passes me at more than 156mph.

my g37x speed odometer hit the 160 mark, but odometers get inaccurate as your speed gets in the tripple digits, so id say it probably limited around 155mph.

Oh and welcome to the G family!!! :yesnod

car is a beast stock, my next upgrade will be an intake.

Although I drive the highways of the Commonwealth at least four times a year, it's one of the very few states where I actually come (relatively) close to obeying the speed limits. Having driven I 95 from Boston to Florida every year for the past 15, I tend to know where the places to NOT speed are. Driving on 495 at any time of the day puts a damper on anything over 10mph.

And kmckis, If I can get a legit 155 out of the car, I won't be needing to override the limiter. After years of mods, it'll be nice to stay close to stock. Also, how about that Valentine One? I've had the same one for 18 years: a remote that hasn't let me down. (And for those curious about my driving, I've been stopped ONCE in 18 years. For 100.9 mph in a 65 in the deserts of Nevada. And he gave me a written warning).

Be advised, kmckis, after extensive research for my new radar detector, the Valentine one has been outclassed (BIG TIME) by two BelTronic radar detectors and the Escort 9500. (I forget the names of the Bel detectors). I'll get back with the info.

Good Day

Dana

P.S. Mudgen, you should be careful about reporting me. After my visit to the Infiniti dealer today, the VSP might be mistaking your car for mine. (Graphite Shadow or White are my choices at this time). And a Uniden BCT996 scanner makes for interesting listening, especially when the VSP are looking for a certain G37x.

Since you run somewhat close to the speed limit in our Commonwealth, there shouldn't be a need. But lets just say that I'm not concerned that the boys in blue and grey will mistake me for anyone else.
