I've been a member for a while, haven't really been active though. Time to start posting because I have an actual project. I started collecting RB parts and R32 GTR driveline parts a bunch of years ago for a project that never really got off the ground. I ended up scraping the project, but couldn't part with the parts that I had accumulated. Earlier this summer, I bought a '94 300ZX for cheap, with a bad engine, and a great, straight, and rust free body. A wildly rare find for someone living in Albany, NY... Of course, the car is from Louisiana, not New York.
At this point, I should say that I'm going ahead with this project. It's my car and I'm going to build it to be what I want. I will accept (and solicit) technical advice to get the project done, however, I would appreciate it if people that do not like the project or don't agree with the path that I'm taking it would either move on to the next topic or only offer helpful advice to completing the project. I don't want this to turn into a debate on the best way to build a 300ZX.
Now for the project... I'm going to do my best to use the entire GTR drivetrain in the 300. I think I have most of what I need and I have seen the YouTube videos of someone already having done the swap. Unfortunately, the videos are crappy and don't show the important details, so I'm going to have to work most of them out myself. I have swapped the diff and spindles from the GTR into the rear suspension cradle and put that back in the car. I'm waiting for the Q45 CV shafts to arrive to see if they really will make it possible to run the GTR components in the 300. If anyone has experience with this, please chime in...
I should have the engine and transmission out in the next couple of days, then I'll pull the front suspension and crossmember out to see what it's going to take to get the GTR stuff in there. From the car dimensions that ive been able to find, there's only about a 15mm width difference between the two cars in the front, I should be able to compensate for that pretty easily.I'll put up posts and pictures as I'm able to make progress. We'll see what I can get done in the next few weeks, shoulder surgery in the middle of Sept will definitely stall progress for a while.
As far as the parts coming out of the car, if anything is useful to someone else, let me know. I'm mostly just planning on taking stuff to the scrap yard because I don't know if any of it is useful to anyone else. The car is an NA with a 5 speed. The engine runs, but makes a terrible knocking when it's running. The engine bay is soooo stuffed that I'm pulling the engine apart (down to the short block) to make it easy to remove. I should be able to tell what's causing the knocking as I get it out of the car, but suspect it's mostly a boat anchor at this point. From driving it around the neighborhood, the trans, brakes, and diff all seem to work. I hear that 240SX guys like the brakes as an upgrade. It also has KYB AGX coil overs on it, fixed spring seats, adjustable dampening that look to be in good shape.
Hopefully this will turn out the way I want it. Any help or advice that you can offer would be appreciated. Oh, yeah, just in case anyone is wondering, I've been working on cars for 33 years. Domestics and imports, carb'd and injected, NA's and turbos. I have a fair amount of fabricating experience, i have machining equipment, and both MIG and TIG welding equipment (plus the ability to use them).
I'll try to post some pitures from my phone, but ifnit doesn't work, I'll log in from my computer and post pics when I get a chance...
