Hello all, Alisaihin here! An eccentric 20 year old (well, 21, just turned that a couple days ago. Still kinda forget that XD) who is currently working as a production welder for Vermeer Manufacturing (something tells me most of you don't know what the f*** that is. Even people in Iowa for some odd reason. OH WELL), and living it...large? No, more like penny pinching in the small town of Pella, Iowa. Despite my penny pinching penchant (oh god the alliteration), I, about a month ago, got myself an old, well-used (and merely treated OKAY) s13 240sx with a KA24E. Currently got a few little gremlins running about, but I'm hoping once I get them ironed out I can sell off the motor at a decent price to someone and get moving on an RB25DET build! That and repair the rust. All the f*** rust. HAHAHAHA...wait I'm a welder, this is fun to me (no I'm serious I actually like welding).

Basically, I bought her to be a project. Sure, has turned out to be more of a project than I thought initially but...hey, it's old, kinda expected extra gremlins to appear, so no buyer's remorse here (especially since the motor still seems to run rather well! Mostly...). I hope to learn a lot from this project and wind up, maybe a year or two down the road with something pretty neat and fast (I see too many diesels that roll coal and too many riced out Civic's for my liking. I wanna do something better than that :P). In the end I actually decided to name the Nissan after my late grandmother, mostly because despite the age and, well, wear she's suffered she still gets up and wants to have fun (my aforementioned grandmother would walk on a knee without cartilage, I s*** you not).

I do have a Hyundai Elantra as well. I call that bugger "The Trooper" or "The Stubborn b****" cause nothing seems to kill it. Stout, sturdy, dependable...and not necessarily a dog, either. Something I love because I can count on her to start with the turn of the key without fail, everytime, and get me where I want to go without drama (I've had this thing magically start on effectively dead batteries...that's a car that refuses to quit if I've seen one! Clickclickclick...*back off starter, try again* CRAAAAANKCRAAAANKCRAAAANKRAWR). Basically my go-to for typical errands. I might do some modification of this car as a summer project (for 2015 or 2016, mind you!) if the 240 turns out well. Might. Maybe. I dunno.

I decided to join up as I saw that this place seems to have plenty of people that know their s***...and lots of resources. No, seriously, lots of stuff I searched on google wound up sending me lots of results to this place. So hence my being here.

I dunno what else to say. I kinda lost some of my brainstorming focusing on the previous paragraphs I slammed out. ADHD at it's worst for me, I swear...

I do actually rather enjoy Iowa. Compared to many peers it's just comfy to me. And I'm fine with that...laidback state, and relatively safe too :P

And thanks much! I hope to see my 240 become something healthier and nicer looking than it is now!

It doesn't look bad from this angle but the rust is definitely there...I've put a hole in a frame rail from how bad it is by trying to jack it on the frame. The coating hid that s*** rather well...heard a creak then BOOM! Hence why I'm definitely gonna put my welding skills to use to repair the rust. Considering sleeving the rails, if it's bad enough I'll get creative with how I do it. I WILL give Nissan a lot of credit-rotted frame rails and the thing still feels rather solid overall, so they must have put it together well.

Not a lot if you just sit around and mope all day. Towns like Pella, Des Moines, Ames have plenty enough to offer...

And the only other gremlin I have poking about is a little knocking issue that only happens on first startup. The startup is also kinda weak, but once you have gotten it moving even a little it's fine. I'll test knock sensor, and if that isn't it, check the timing chain. If not that...I fear the worst, honestly. But hey, this motor blows it's more excuse to do my swap, eh? Though I'd rather just get it working again so when I do the swap (if I wind up doing it. If I have to rebuild the motor I might just beef it up and turbo it) I can sell the motor for some decent cash to someone who needs a motor. Sure, it's a SOHC, but a motor is a motor, hm?

...I swear both replies were meant to be simple. Jesus.

Well its like a ca and an sr or better yet. An s13 and s14 you go by age of a motor. I dont know the going price around you but around me here in orlando fl a sohc motor sells for <250 and thats with a harness and all. Thats pennys compared to what a rb swap will cost you. That wont even cover a driveshaft.

The knock sensor wont make the car knock. What it will do is make the car limp and be sluggish. Im some extreme cases itll make the car stall or not even start. It sounds like your oil pump could be on its way out. To be honest if I were you instead of even thinking about rebuilding that motor I would 1. Replace it with a diff sohc or swap it to a dohc. With a dohc you have many pros (newer motor, potentially less mileage, way easier to find used parts because it was used in our cars alot longer then the sohc, with easier to find parts comes cheaper to find parts and closer parts sso that will usually cut down on shipping prices or gas used to go get it, and it has more power and naturally aspirated power potential)

Again I dont know what going prices around you are but around me an entire running ka with every single peice needed to go from sohc to dohc minus ac and ps can be had for less then 500$ usually.

That was supposed to be a simple reply too

Eh, I figured an old SOHC wouldn't go for much (it'd at least be SOMETHING), since I was only really planning to get 400 from it. Though the oil pump was crossing my mind as I typed that post out, it'd make sense given its only on start-up (poor oil flow because weak pump).
