I've posted this on general but was advised I should post it on this forum.

Intro & Question Let me begin with a brief introduction. My love for the Q begin in '96 after purchasing a '90 Q45. My wife at the time & I were actually looking for a Lexus. Thank goodness we didn't make that mistake. Needless to say, the car went in the divorce. I didn't sleep well until I found another one. Bought a '97 Q45t last year. I've been reading this board for awhile and finally registered. I've acquired some good info.

My first question is: On the old board home page there was an option to become a member of NICO. Am I missing something on the new board? I'm interested in becoming a member!

Second question:I may be getting the '90 back sometime in the near future(May involve getting the ex-wife with the package). So I've been monitoring the maintenance on the car (yes, it's possible to remain friends with an ex). Anyway, the car has been overheating. She attempted to replace the radiator cap but noticed something seemed to be missing. I don't know the name of the part but I'm assuming it's the filler neck. The part runs from the top radiator hose into what appears to be the top end of the engine. Difficult to tell without removing some plastic covers & I didn't have any tools with me. Can anyone tell me the proper part name & what this part may cost? I'm sure I'll get many responses as you all seem to be knowledgable about your cars. Particularly the first gen Q.

Right now, the entire website is being drastically overhauled. The old link, that said "join nico today for just $35" is gone right now. We are currently discussing different ways to do this. What is likely to happen soon is this:

Instead of a "join" button, there will instead be a "donate" button. You will be allowed to donate any amount you wish and the money will be used to help pay for the site.

We will bring back the "join" button later, when we develope some more tangible perks to being a nico member. Joining the forums is free, and will continue to be so. However, soon we hope to have NICO sponsored events, meets, etc, where being a paid member of nico may give you reduced prices on certain things, such as track events, hotel costs, raffles, etc. However, this is in the future, keep that in mind. We hope this to be a HUGE year for nico, even bigger than last year. We want the club to grow even more, on a level beyond the forums. Last year we made a huge leep in the forums, this year we hope to make that same leap with the rest of the club.

I think I answered it in the thread Part Identification. I think your ex may think there is something missing from the cap. On most cars, she's right but on this one, & some Toyota's etc, they now have a filler cap, as it is at a higher point than the radiator, & will lessen the chance of an air lock.

The real radiator cap is on the radiator. :D

So why is his car running hot??? I was running my 92' Q two nights ago in huge traffic jam on the 101 freeway here for about 30 minutes. The temp gauge climbed higher than I'd ever seen it. Is it time for a radiator core job???

i would guess water pump going kaput.

whatever it is temp gauge moving at all above normal is bad. i wouldn't drive another foot further until you get it resolved.

Start with the radiator, as that is where most of the problems start from, & if that is OK, go for the Thermostat.

If that don't fix it, the water pump is the last thing that should cause the problems.

NB. When you take off the cover over the radiator, check between the radiator & the A/C condensor & see how much junk is donw there. Mine was 1/4 blocked from road rubbish.

Did you have the AC on? Does the condenser fan work properly?

The thermostat usually fails open [partially open] after being eaten alive by corrosive unchanged coolant. The viscous fan drive can fail in the un coupled position but usually this shows up as a hot idle.
