intermittent speedometer

Can someone please provide me some diagnostic expertise.IS it the sensor or the instrument cluster.

My car occasionally (mostly now) speedometer does not work but still drive nice. When the speedometer does not work the odometer does not work either. Sometimes while driving the speedometer works and all is well.

When it does not work and at higher rpms in 5th gear the engine cuts out with the KA engine) and when it drops the rpm the car starts working again. With the SR engine its not a problem when the speedometer is not working

Im planning to change the sensor but want to make sure its the sensor. and nit the instrument cluster

had a similar problem with the rx7 i used to have, i blew the speedo cable off my transmission racing and the cable inside the cable got lost. more than likely you need a new speedo gear and cable, you can prolly find that stuff on ebay. but i seriously doubt it's the cluster

there is no cable if im not mistakenI think the 240 uses a electronic sensor

yeah i'm having the same problem goixiz. i just got my 89 240. the other owner put an engine in awhile ago along with the guages. sometimes it works fine, but today i went out and the speedo wouldn't work and the odo wouldn't work either. but when i turned the car off and on again everything worked fine. i would like to know what it is. if it's the speed sensor, is it hard to change?
