My 240 sometimes idles rough on starting, then is OK as it runs at any speed. I tuned it up - plugs, wires, rotor, air and fuel filters, Oxygen Sensor. It runs great, but still sometimes idles like it is on only two cylinders. The EGR valve is suggested by my Chilton book, but it looks tricky to get out and replace. I saw the suggestions in earlier posts and wonder if there is some special tool like a universal joint socket wrench to wrap around that corner and access those nuts.Rich

I believe I have read in other posts that if you remove your EGR valve, you may not pass Emissions inspection. Just a thought if you live in an area with them. Good luck!!!!!!!!

If the engine runs rough on start up this removes the egr from the cause. The egr does not function on start up unless it is stuck open and if stuck open it would idle rough all the time. If you remove the egr you will fail emissions. The egr also serves to reduce engine pinging.

So, where does this lead me? I have no more ideas. Could it be that debris has gotten into the EGR diaphragm and occasionally causes it to bleed air?

I suggest you take it out and clean it, and inspect it, if it is worn-out you should replace it. Just cleaning it might help. I had a rough idle too. My mechanic told me to do this before I had it replaced. It fixed the prob... for a while. Eventually I had to replace it. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

I sure would take the EGR valve out if I could figure out how. Those bolts that hold it in couldn't be in a less convienent place. How do I get behind there and get them out?

This might sound dumb or already considered, but do you have your idle set too low? My friend drives a new 2002 Accord, and his started to idle rough sometimes (around 4-500 rpms) Just something to consider

Nope, idle is set at 650 in gear and 750 in neutral. How do I get that #&*% EGR out?
