Twice in the last week I have gone out and started my car (92 S13) and it has idled extremely rough for about 5 - 10 secs then stalls. If I try to give it gas it stalls as well. Then presto I start it again and it's fine.

The first time it happened I tried 5 or 6 times to start it without any luck so I put the peddle to the floor and managed to get it going. After that it was great. No more problems for a couple of days.

Anyone have some insight as to the problem.

Just a thought, try replacing the fuel filter.

My car was acting like that just before the fuel pump died. The next time it refuses to start, turn the key to the on position, this would turn on the fuel pump. Check for pressure in the fuel line before the fuel filter. If you can squeeze the line shut rather easily, then open it up and make sure fuel is actually flowing. Mine was bone dry.

Thanks for the reply. That's an excellent idea.

I did search the matter but none of the other posts seem to have the same symptoms. They would die at intersections etc. Not really what my car was doing.

Well. I seem to have located what causes the problem. When I start the car with the A/C turned on I guess the extra accessories put additional strain on the engine. It happened again today. As it was sputtering I turned off the A/C and the car returned to normal idle. Once idling fine I turned the A/C back on with no problem.

i´m glad...but maybe you can chek the IAA valve (which control the air mixture during idle). Check the connections and ground...

if you turn on the A/C and the RPMS drop, maybe the IAA is the problem (rpm´s at idle 750 rpms aprox.) when you turn on the AC the idle goes to 950 rpms aprox...

if you idle is Ok when you turn on AC, don´t start your car w/ AC on. :D

this kind of problems SUCKS!!!

check the idle control valves sticky, sounds like the IACV - FICD valve thats responsable for boosting the idle when the AC is on. its possibly gunked up/malfunctioning.

Yeah the official term when i ordered mine from nissan was "regulator valve" but i guess iaa is the same. It costs like $70 - $140 depending on whether you got connections.

Idealy, you should shut everything off before starting the car as any additional load on the battery and starter takes a significant amount more life out of them.

We all know the expression "The worst thing you can do to your car is start it". So why add stress to an already stressed-out process? When I start my car I make sure even the radio is off and my foot is off the brakes. You might be surprised how much current the brake lights draw.

Another issue is that if you leave the AC on when you shut off the car you are promoting the formation of mold in the ventilation system by allowing moisture to form easily in the vents as they rapidly warm up. To avaid this, I turn off the AC and air recirculation a few minutes before I stop to help ensure the vents are warm and dry.

Have you ever noticed a stale smell when you get back in you car after the AC was on but it has all warmed up again? That's not mold buit it's the precursor.

It doesn't fix your problem, but it might save you another problem down the road.
