Intermitant Shift release solenoid problem

When I depress the brake pedal I can hear a click but the shift release solenoid intermittantly will not let me take it out of park. The dealer said that something was spilt ie. pop or coffee etc. They say if all it needs is a cleaning it will be $350.00, If they have to replace it $800.00. Ouuch!!!!!Is there an easier way. I'm not a mechanic but I have some skills. It is a 2002 Pathfinder LE.
