I would recommend against painting the steering wheel - the paint my interfere with proper airbag deployment.

How would paint interfere with airbag deployment?

Why would you want to paint the steering wheel?

I'm pretty lost in this thread! haha. Explain yourself a lil better, because we can only guess what you are trying to do.

Maybe you can use a kind of vinyl paint. On my last car, I used a glossy black vinyl paint, and holy cow does it look stock. The only iff i have with this topic is that it's the steering wheel so...it's a bit different texture.

can you say with certainty that the paint will not interfere with the deployment of the driver front airbag? Where does the airbag deploy? Magically without popping a cover? Paint can get in the seams and affect the timing of the airbag.

Ascetics? Same reason why some people tint their headlights?

Vinyl paint will work, but you will need to use some sort of adhesion promoter first or it will flake off pretty quickly. Also, if you clear coat it, you need to make sure that the clearcoat is compatible with the paint, or it will not work correctly.

I agree, though, that painting the air bag cover is a bad idea, for the reasons mentioned above.

There are plenty of other (safer) surfaces to paint. Also consider that there are a couple companies that sell replacement trim kits, so you can either veneer or even change (depending on the kit) your trim pieces inside so they are either woodgrain-like, or colored.

I doubt a thin coat of paint will affect anything.

I'm going to have to side with Clipsed on this one on the idea that it will not affect airbag deployment (there are no "seams," the airbag cover is designed to split right above and to the side of the Nissan emblem, the perforated seams are on the inside of the cover. However, I side with EV in saying that paint will most likely not last in this area, but I'll take it one step further-even with adhesion promoter, the paint will wear off quickly. You would have to use a vinyl dye (Syms Vinyl Dye might work). Even still, it may not last. Also, if you've ever used Armor-All or any similar product on the cover, the paint will NEVER stick, nomatter what.

Yeah I forgot to mention the adhesive promoter...but I also agree with Clipsed and EV.

You have just performed a mod that most probably gives your insurance company the absolute right of refusal (modifying a safety or security feature). I would make sure I get something in writing from my insurance before moving ahead with this.

cant you just take a hobby knife over the seams and sort of break the paint where the airbag would deploy??

Paint interferes with airbag, because its a sticky substance like glue and it can hold the steering wheel so that it wont pop when deploying air bag.
