Hello All!!!

I have been driving my stripped out 240 for quite some time now, but I finally have the funds and equipment to paint the car myself. The interior has been completely stripped, even the tar and I would like to paint it a nice, dark grey or semi-gross light grey. I believe that either of these colors would complement a whole range of exterior paint color choices.

My question is this: How would I go about prepping the interior surface for paint? I know that I could probably just sand it, but there are so many kinks, dips and tough to reach places that it sounds like that would be very time consuming. I've heard of Aircraft Stripper, but I've never actually met anyone that has used it or how it works.

While I'm on the subject of paint, I would also like to paint the exterior and I want to do it all myself. Like I said, I have the equipment but I'm not sure about the type of paint that I should use. For example, single stage or multi-stage?

Any imput on this would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and yes the interior and exterior colors would be different......as I don't want a cobalt blue interior to distract the hell out of me while I'm driving!

I have..... didnt prep it at all though lol. I stripped my interior one day just to know how to do it and I gagged when I saw my interior bare-assed. There was soooooo much wierd crap/discoloration/scracthes that I just painted it all like a shiny aluminum silver and put the interior back in. It looked great tho even without prepping. I take out the interior when I go to my drift battles (where I win EVERY TIME).

i did mine. after getting out all of the tar paper, using solvent to remove all stickyness. then it was a bucket of warm soappy water and some wet/dry. it isn't that bad, i only did the floor and under the dash/center console. took the dash out to make sure i got it all covered

i got smart about it, instead of masking off windows and pannels individualy, i got a drop cloth and taped it from one rocker to the other and to the inside roof, thus making a tent. left the hatch open and taped it to that. then it was off to town with 4 cans of primer and then 4 cans of flat black. looks 10 times better, even though my car is red. probably do the side panels and roof when i get home but looks much better with the "blotches" gone.

problem i was having was the pedal area. if my shoes were wet from outsid, it was hard to keep my feet from sliding around. was thinking of getting some of that "liquid rubber" stuff for tool handles and painting non stick floor mats in...ghetto but works.

good luck. i was happy with it. just make sure to remove the wiring harness on the DS floor, all seats and the drain plugs. if there is ANY rust (like surface rust around my seat mounts), i would reccomend taking it down to the metal with a wire brush. will be worth it. also make sure it's completely dry when you start to paint. get a compressor and blow out the cracks or do it when it's hot outside, enough to dry the inside out COMPLETELY. it'll bite you in the *** if you don't.

good luck

Hello,

Thanks for the information. I have completely stripped and re-tooled the entire interior. I removed the complete wire harness and rewired, spliced and generally cut out the majority of wires in the car and ran everything through the car's frame!! I'm telling you, the only thing in the interior is a shift knob and my seat!

So anyway, sanding everything down will certainly be doable, but what about the area where the rear speakers used to be (I have a coupe)? How do you sand all those folds and bends and crinkles?

Thanks again for the info!
