upgraged my speakers about 6 months ago, & its been a huge improvement over the factory sound, but better speakers in the rear bar behind the seats (luggage floor finisher panels) have make for quite a bit more vibration between the panels. up to now, ive just been living with it, but i figured id tear back into everything this weekend & try to tackle the problem.

1st question is, has anyone done anything about this & got any tips / pointers/ suggestions?

2nd, my first best guess to solving the problem is to apply some sort of film or tape between the contact areas. any recomendations?

ill really be flyin blind here, so if anyones got any idears, it'd be much appreciated.

Might I suggest some dynamant. I've got no personal experience with it, but have heard it works wonders.

Go to Dynamat.com and look at all the different products available from them. I've had a few cars that I've done with this stuff and the difference is amazing.

wont rule that out, but im wanting to try a bit more light weight (negligible weight, im sure, but...) solution first. ive found a 3M tape online thats for plastic-to-plastic isolation which is what i think 80% of the noise is from. the 3-way joint between the top & front half of the bar & the side panels in particular...

^ this stuff here sure sounds like it would fit the bill, but i sure as hell dont wanna pick up a $2700 dollar case of it. anyone ever heard of it /know if any hardware places would carry it?

thanks for the input guys

for a panel squeak? how bout' no.

picked up a roll of that 3M tape & started puttin it on some of the panel joints. so far, its night & day better. most of the intersections, it was easy enough to hide too, should only be barely visible in a few seams when finished.

couple more left to do before i can say how much it really helped

I must say that I agree with the dynamat suggestion. My whole interior has it and I love it. I have rode in other Z's with out it and cannot tell a difference in power at all, but can definitely tell that mine is so much quieter than theirs (but I can still here my exhaust ) Its also a plus, because it does help the music not escape fromn the car.

nothing never sounded so good.

after gettin everything all tucked back in place, i went through a couple different songs that didnt have particulary heavy bass, but it was at just the right frequency to cause what seemed like the worst of the chatter / vibration with the panels. anywhere, at any volume, the noise is totally gone now. i did notice some in the doors (i hadnt heard before over the rest of it i imagine, lol) which ill probably try & pin-point, & apply some tape to if it ends up being an area it would work in.

like i said, this was the problem ive been trying to remedy, & not incoming noise through the sheet metal of the car. this would have been where dynamat would come in helpful, but in this case, all it would have done was keep the noise i was hearing trapped inside the car. (i may still look into putting some around the wheel wells, as i noticed a ton of noise from them while driving in rain with the plastic out, but anyway...)

applied tape to the bottom side of all 5 of these pads as shown by the 2 red lines. just 2 strips 1/4 to 3/8 wide

i applied tape all along the edges shown by the red line here. the lower half already had a couple pieces of felt tape from the factory, but they didnt look to cover real well, so i took them off & went over the area. if i had to guess, id say this piece was some of the biggest improvement. (the other area that made the biggest difference was the bottom front of the upper bar. no pic since i had put it back before hand, but if your really interested, i can get one)

beside the panel is the friggin monster roll of this tape i bought (need some?), and the rubbing alcohol (you may prefer dark eyes or smirinoff) to clean the edges & get a good bond.

i padded these pads too. (see below) the push in clips fit pretty loose in some of them. the tape snugged them up pretty well & should cut down on any vibration there might have been. considering the metric ton of the stuff i have, couldnt hurt

^^^ note how the factory felt tape on the edge here is only in a few places & doesnt cover real well. the piece i replaced it with goes continuous over the whole edge

it was kinda time consuming to do right, but really pretty easy to do. if you got the problem, heres your answer...
