well...we figured out a way of checking the timing on the DET...you dont need a spare coilpack from a nissan...we cut up a DSM coil...put the coil end in the motor and the distrib end in the coilpack from the DET...worked like a charm...ill get some pics so u guys can check it out...god more DSM compatable nissan parts lol (1st gen radiators work in the S13 as well)

so u dont have to go to nissan or a junk yard to specifically hunt down a Z32 or Q45 coilpack...the 1st gen eclipse ones work fine...just requires a little cutting

Why not just loop an inductive pickup on the coil #1 negative wire. It works like a charm for me. I didn't have to go out anywhere looking for anything.

Yup, same here. Hook the clamp on #1 coilpack wire and it worked fine.

I have no clue what are you guys supposed to be checking? Is this like another way if you don't have a timing gun? Also, what do you suppose to look for...

no its for use with the timing gun...its just an easier method of checking the timing...its more accurate

More accurate? Where did you read that from? I don't see how this method is more accurate. It seems to be the same accuracy to me. The ground on the #1 coil pack is more then enough for it to pick up a pulse from.

All I do is take the timing lights inductive clamp, and hook it over the entire bundle of wires going to the #1 coil pack and it works perfectly. I don't see the need to use anything else, and since the engine seems to be its smoothest when my timing light is showing me 15BTDC I'm going to pretty much say that the normal way is just as accurate without all the effort.

sorry...not more accurate...i meant more easier...just makes it so u dont have to cram the clamp inbetween a few other wires

thats what the big loop is for that pokes up from behind the valvecover right? so...wiring up and extra coilpack is supposed to be easier than twisting the pickup just a little?

ur supposed to use coilpack number 1 for timing...not the loop behind the valve cover

there is an inductive timing hookup in the rear of the engine, but for some reason, not all engines have them. If you go by the FSM way of checking timing, using a coil pack and plug wire is the correct way. But remember, there are tons of correct ways in auto mechanics.

I don't use the inductive loop either, I just slip my clamp over the bundle of wires that goes to the #1 coilpack and it works just fine.
