Ok, so go ahead and delete this if this has already been mentioned before... but I don't believe it has.

On Saturday I was able to turn on my engine without having the smartkey in the cabin. Here's how...

Ok... so INITIALLY I DID use my key to turn on my car. I went with my gf from her house to my house. When we got to my house I gave her the keys outta my pocket so she could open the door to the house. My engine was still running at this point. I moved my car a little further up the driveway and when I finally got to where I wanted to park it... I turned off the engine BUT I left it in the ACC mode so the radio was still on.

Before I turned the car off all the way, I remembered that I had to park my car in reverse. At this point the car is still in ACC mode with the radio on with the NO KEY warning flashing. I stepped on the brake and pushed the start button... AND THE ENGINE TURNED ON.

I was a little amazed so I moved the car how I needed it to be, turned the engine off and again left it in ACC mode. Once again with NO KEY flashing, I stepped on the brake and pushed the start button and just as faithfully as always, the engine turned on.

So what I figure is that obviously you need the key to start the engine for the first time. After the initial start... as long as you don't turn the car off ALL THE WAY, for example leaving it on ACC for the radio... you can turn the engine on by stepping on the brake and pressing the start button ALL WITHOUT THE KEY.

Haha, just an FYI. This might come in handy if you ever SOMEHOW turn on your car and leave your keys somewhere. Go somewhere and realize you don't have your keys before turning it off so you can leave it in ACC mode so you don't get stranded.

I think it workded techinically because you turned the car "on" with the key and the car was in "on" mode. You can't get too ACC without the key, and seeing that the car was in that state, you can jump to whatever "on" mode you want from there.

Interesting find

^That's the same assumption I came away with. As soon as you go to OFF without the key... you can't do anything. As long as you have SOMETHING on, even without the key, you can turn the engine on.

And I agree with the person that said this is a carjacker's dream. Before I realized this, I would always leave my car with the radio on while washing my car and I would walk away from it with the keys in my hand thinking it was safe. If someone had just jumped in and pressed the brake and push button... they'ld be off with my car. Hopefully the 'NO KEY' warning sign would've scared them off.

When the engine is on... you hit the button once to turn it off and once to go to ACC mode. The trick is you have to do this quick. Sorta like when you double-click on the mouse. If you do it right it goes from ENGINE ON to ACC while skipping the OFF mode.

I tried this last night and my car didn't start after being in ACC mode. You may want to make sure your spare key isn't in the car.

My spare key is in my room. I don't believe the dash would say 'NO KEY' if my spare was in the glove or somewhere else in the cabin.

I tested this out right now in my 2.5S Coupe and put the key far enough from the car to where the light came on saying "No Key" and it started fine.

Won't be doing that again though, even though it was nighttime and noone was around I still don't trust people enough lol

The night I initially discovered this... I was able to repeat it as many times as I wanted.

I've tried to repeat it since... but my car won't turn on.
