Some time back, the ABS, Slip, and TCS lights came on in my 2001 Nissan Maxima. I drove with it for a while with no problems at all. Now I am ready to sell the car so decided to tackle the problem so I could clear the lights. I did A LOT of searching on this site and other sites. The problem I have is different than all the others I have come across in old posts.

I checked the fuses, and they were all fine. So I went to pull the codes. As instructions and posts said, I grounded pin 9 on the OBD connector and it spit out code 31 (right rear ABS sensor). I bought a brand new OEM sensor. I replaced the old one with the new one (man, it was hard to get the old one out). I also took the negative terminal off the battery for an hour so the ECU would reset. I figured I needed to clear the code after putting in the new sensor. I finally get it all done, start the car, and the lights are still lit up. I was not happy at all. So I drove the car around, and the lights are still there.

So I decide to check the codes again. Now I am getting code 31 and 35 (left rear sensor)! This doesn't make ANY sense because I just put in a new sensor for the right and it's still giving that code; and NOW giving a code for the left wheel sensor also (which it wasn't before). At this point, I'm confused as hell. I don't want to buy a new rear left sensor b/c that may not be the problem at all. I feel like something completely unrelated is causing this, even though those codes are still coming up. How can a code for the right sensor still come up when I just replaced it!?

Did I not reset the ECU properly? Any suggestions on other things to check? I really want to avoid going to the dealer on this one because I just need to clear it so I can sell this car without the buyer haggling me over these lights. I would REALLY appreciate some help because it has me and my Z friends stumped (I also own a Z32 TT).

It's possible that the rear left sensor was already marginal so when you replaced the right one. Now, the left sensor is no longer synchronized with the other sensors. Hence the new error code.

so I pretty much have no choice other than to replace the left one now, huh?

plug it into your OBD clear the codes, and off you go.

^I already have that tool...it only clears codes related to the check engine light (which I do not have)...you cannot clear an ABS code with that...as a matter of fact, you cannot even read an ABS code with that

yup, you need a Consult type tool (or similar) to read those

Update for anyone else in the future who may come across a strange problem like this:

I finally replaced the left rear sensor since that was the only code coming up. I reset the battery, and started the car up. The lights are finally gone! Success! So in the end, it was just the sensors, and not something else.

I hit a huge pothole and my ABS, slip and TCS light came on also. I was able to get a C1102 rear sensor code at an auto store, is this something I can change on my own? thank you in advance for any help.

If you have all the tools and are mechanically inclined, yes. BTW, the sensors were basically frozen. I had to break them and use a lot of force to get the old ones out.
