stumbled on these today,Magnefine filters! of course this is after just replacing my oem transmission inline filter!

Magnefine makes an inline transmission filter with a magnet to catch junk before it creates wear, also can be used for steering return line

also they make a magnetic prefilter that screws on between your engine and oil filter called the Forcefeild, that removes all the particles that are magnetically attractive, reducing wear on engine internals

both seem reasonably priced, any one have any thoughts on these products? go to http://www.emergingent.com for a peek!

Looks like the same type of thing here, http://www.thebeartrap.com

But it seems that a few strategically placed neodymium magnets would be about the same.

Physics argues strongly for any magnet in/on a high velocity line is a waste of time. It takes a very powerful magnetic field gradient and lots of time to pull a 1 micron metal particle onto a magnetic surface through an oil flim. If you ever have more than a stray evey now and then wear particle you can SEE with your eyes, the engine/transmission is rapidly failing. The best 'magnet' application is a ring magnet in the transmission sump--an area wher ethe oil is hot (low viscosity) low/moderate turbulence, and enough fluid to 'hold some particles' on shutdown tha tmay be close enough to the magnet for it to catch. they are always smoke/grey sludge in color and like clay in texture--even there.

Your normal oil filter will catch any particles big enough to scratch bearing surfaces during normal operation. 99%+ of engine wear is CORROSION and START-UP related(save top ring wear in highly loaded engines.) Modern engines with premium quality oils and filters (lube, gas, air), good gasoline quality, oil changed at reasonable mileages, just don't wear out. However, running a 'pop-charger' or non OEM quality air filter will drastically shorten engine life due to the abrasive dust intake. A single teaspoon of dust fed to an engine over 8 hours will completely wear it out by the end of the 8 hour period. I think most people do not realize the importance of good air filtration, good gas, and more frequent than owners manual oil changes.

^ Very sage advice by texasoil.

Why do you think magnets are invariably located on plugs at the bottom of sumps?
