This is a problem Ive never heard about.... I dont really mind but Id be interested if i could get any feedback.

The lights do not come on when you open the rear doors... I checked the switches and theyre both good... To add confusion, the lights come on whenever the front doors are opened, but nothing when the rears are opened.

The "door open" thing on the display does nothing when the rear doors are opened but it works fine with the fronts......

I really think the car thinks its a 2 door!!

Anyone?

Wes, did you pull out the switch to test with a meter?

I know that the hold down screw is also part of the ground path. or at least the metal frame of the switch has to be in contact with clean metal of the body. they can easily corrode up at the screw back there.

No I tested it with a known good one from my parts car..... But still, if it was a connection issue, it would work sometimes and not work other times, IMHO.. IT has NEVER worked...!

The lights and the display all operate off the door switches. Pull the switch out, disconnect it and check that you have around 12volts at the connector. If you have power at the door switch then your harness is good and it's the switch.

The fact that BOTH rear doors don't work makes me think it's a connector issue. Look in the FSM and it will tell you the location of the splice & where all the connectors are.

But I'm with Jay - A door switch ground problem would be more likely. I had an old Corolla with the same problem.

Sounds like no ground on both rear door switches. Check G/Y wire for both rear door swithces for continuity to the ground with doors in open pos. you should have a path. Front door swithces override rear when dors are open that's why you get dome lights "on". LH front door switch overrides all (priority). Does it have step lamps?Do they work when you open rear doors?Intriguing situation, w/o a fifth of vodka imposible to solve the puzzle Loking at electrical diags

Yes - as Farfetched pointed out you have to make sure all the other doors are closed. If that's the case the problem is a connection somewhere. Although looking at the 94 FSM, there doesn't appear to be a common connection for the rear switches. The left rear door switch is in the tail harness and the right rear is connected directly to the right front. Hmmmm

I'm thinking switches again.

Wes,

I had a similar problem. Primary difference was the problem occured only on one rear door. It required a replacement door switch for the driver's door (no kidding) and the new controller I bought from you for my passenger side rear door.

The driver's door switch has two contacts in it, and one of them was corroded beyond cleaning. Run the mode I & II diagnostic electrical tests in the FSM (yet another thank you to Wes here on the FSM) to figure out whether the control units work. I think mode IV also checks the door switches.

Your problem may not be the same, but run the diagnostics.

p.s. the door control unit you sold me works great!
