Has anyone ever been in a situation where the proximity electronic key does not work? For example, if the key failed to send its electronic signature to the vehicle, how could one unlock the door/start the car? My previous cars with remote keys also had a "regular" key and a keyhole in the door for manual operation. Any ideas? Thanks, Howard (2009 Murano SL/AWD)

There is a key hole in the door. All you have to do is pull the traditional key out of the I-Key. When you want to start the vehicle, simply pop the I-Key into the slot (to the right of the steering wheel) and that will allow you to start the vehicle. Does that make sense?

Wow, do I feel stupid! Almost 7,000 miles of driving my new Murano and I never noticed the keyhole in the door. Thanks!!

Yep, there is only one keyhole, on the drivers side. It should also be possible to just press the unlock button on the I-key and use it as a traditional keyfob in that case. The lock, unlock, panic, and liftgate buttons have a longer range and don't use the proximity sensors.

Hmason, I'm a bit more concerned why there would be a need to use the manual key after only 7k miles. Was the question asked out of curiosity or did that situation happen recently? I'm only asking because if the Intelligent key didn't work there may be something else going on that needs a closer look. It could be simple, for example, the I-key battery could be dying early or something else, like one of the proximity sensors is faulty. I only have about 6.5k miles but my key has never failed to work from my pocket. Make sure the key isn't being held too close to the vehicle or it could misread the key as being in the vehicle and will not unlock the doors.

Bunshaw,Rest easy. The question was curiosity only as we just finished a trip from CT to FL and back and I wondered what would I do if the key failed. Everything on the vehicle performed flawlessly. I have become a real Murano enthusiast. I have owned all the luxury brands i.e. MB, BMW, Audi etc., and could not be more pleased with the MO based on performance, price, and on and on. BTW, we took the Autotrain to FL and drove all the way back. The Autotrain is an uncomfortable evening but when you arrive in FL in the AM and 855 miles of driving was eliminated it seems well worth it. We paid $424 for 2 adults, the car, dinner and breakfast. The return trip was quoted at $825 so we elected to drive all the way back. This was probably more than you needed to know in response to your question but, what the heck. Ciao, Howard

That problem was solved last year through a recall, and the new 08+ i-key's don't have this issue.

There was a recall on it - my dad has an 07 altima, and got notice from the dealer to come get new keys, and no problems since.

Actually there is a way to tell - take out the hard key, so that you are looking at all the gold writing on the back in the hard key slot (the FCC ID stuff, etc...) Towards the lower right of this area, there should be a circle inside another circle - if you have this, then you're good to go!

I'll try to post a pic in a few min.

I have a Nissan Tiida and I had intelligent key troubles while away in the countryside . The story goes that I went to the country and parked unknowingly between a radio transmission poll and a cell tower disguised as a palm tree. Upon trying to restart the car I got no response from either the mechanical key nor the intelligent key:( . Residence informed me that this had happen before with other model cars but they eventually worked. I had to tow the car from that area and even then the iKey and its mechanical key did not work:cry: . I had to ask someone to retrieve the spare key from home in the city. Even when I move away from the area both keys still were not recognized by the car. The spare key worked when someone brought it from home, Thank God!! . Any ideas on why and how to re-activate the Ikey and the its mechanical key insert? BTW the Ikey doesn't have the marks u had mentioned should be there in the new models but that side what would explain the none functioning of the mechanical key?
