I own a 2007 Altima with the keyless fob. Just today, while traveling for the holidays, I happen to get a 2009 Altima as my rental. I forgot I had given my keys to the rental to my nephew to retrieve some gifts from the car and the next day proceeded to get in the rental to run some errands. I drove to my first stop and that's when I realized I didn't have the keys to rental with me. The car wouldn't lock. It did the beep when you actually left your keys in the car. So... my 2007 keys allowed me to start and drive the car, although not lock or unlock it. Seems this is a bit of a security issue.

Could it be possible that the signal is only unique for the locks and not the ignition? Has anyone else experienced this?

You sure? The rental keys were in it when you started it, correct? Then you shut it off and restarted it with your 07 keys?

I'm pretty sure if the car wouldn't lock, it has it's own I-Key in it.

Sounds like the rental keys are in the car somewhere. That would let you start the car and not allow the doors to lock.

Yeap, maybe a spare fob that fell under the seat etc...
