The intelligent key has antennas mounted in and out the vehicle, and is "tuned" to be able to differentiate the inside vs. outside of the car fairly well. So if you're sitting in a locked car with the key "inside" the vehicle, it would not be possible to unlock the car using the outside request switch.
Same idea when you accidentally leave the key on the driver seat or in your cupholder/console and try to lock the car from the outside, car beeps to tell you that the key was left inside the car.
You'd have to bring the key up pretty close to the glass are to possibly trick the antennas to think that the key is outside. Try it, have some fun! Roll the window down and edge the key slowly from the inside out and reach out to push the outside door request switch and see where the threshold is ... pretty impressive!
Similarly, you can have the key in your pocket in the front passenger or back seat and it can still detect that the key is inside and allow the car to start, so you don't have to actually pass the key to the driver!
