Had a weird and unexpected thing happen the other day.

My wife and her father drove to my wife's place of work, where she got out and he jump in the drivers seat and drove it back to his home (she didn't want to pay for parking). But once my wife got to her office, she realized that she still has the Intellikey.

There was no key in the ignition and no fob anywhere near the Murano, yet my father-in-law was able to drive it all the way home without incident.

I thought that without the Intellikey anywhere around, the engine would shutoff after a few minutes. Further, I didn't think that you would be able to move the gear selector.

So, did I miss something in the manual or do I have a problem? I for one, do not like this particular behaviour at all.

The intelligent key is only required to start the vehicle.

If you get out of the car and shut the door it will give you a series of beeps to alert you, but as long as the ignition is on it can be driven.

My experience is with the FX35, I imagine other Nissan products are pretty much the same.

That blows.

Is this a safety thing? I mean, they know when the key leaves the vehicle, so why not lock the shifter or start a timer (ok, I can picture someone stalling in the middle of an intersection or on a train crossing).

I know it isn't any different that leaving a normal key in, but why not go the extra step with the technology.

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for reading!
