Intelligent Key - purchasing a spare

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Here in Canada an additional intelligent key for my 2011 EX35 from an Infiniti dealer is $211 plus $69 for programming.

Has anyone had any experience purchasing an intelligent key elsewhere and just taking it to the dealership to be programmed? Also, can a Nissan dealer program an Infiniti key? (I am 2-1/2 hours from an Infiniti dealer but 10 minutes from a Nissan dealer)

thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience which would answer either question, but I'm thinking one quick phone call could take care of the latter one ;)

Not Infiniti related, but I am in the process of doing the same thing with my 2011 Ford Explorer wherein I was able to buy two blank keys from the manufacturer for about $69/each, have them cut by a local locksmith, and I can program them to work with my car using a few steps explained in the user's manual. Easy-peasy! For some reason, I doubt Infiniti is this easy.

I would assume that the Nissan dealer can program the key, since they are all the same (except for the plastic logo glued on the front). But I would still just call them and ask.

I called my local Nissan dealer and they are not sure if they can program an Infiniti key since they have never tried one before. So the Infiniti dealer 2-1/2 hours away might be my only option.

I am going to be in the city where the Infiniti dealer is located next week for business meetings but unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the dealership until 4:30. The service department is only open until 5:30 so they don't take service appointments past 3:30. The best they can do is let me pick up the key at 4:30 and take a chance my local Nissan dealer can figure it out. If not, I will have to drive back into the city another day.

How long will you be there for? Does that Infiniti dealer offer loaner vehicles? And would you have time to drop off your car and pick it up sometime later over the course of your trip? Just looking for some other options for you.

I am in meetings from 8:00 until 4:00 for 2 days at a location that is a 1/2 hour from the Infiniti dealer (meetings are city center and dealership is right on the city outskirts on my way back home). But I have decided to sneak out a little early for lunch on the second day, drive to the dealership, drop off the vehicle and have them drive me back to my meeting in their shuttle service. So round trip should be just over an hour and I will be back downtown for the afternoon meeting. That way, they can have the vehicle for the entire afternoon (the service department gave me an estimate of 2 hours for a key programming appointment). Then they can come pick me up after my meeting and drive me back out to the dealership to pick up my vehicle. Whew............I hope I never lose one of these keys and have to go through this process again!!!! But, hey, I knew going into this that the closest Infiniti dealer was a long drive away. The things we will do for love............haha. ;)

When I bought my 2011, it came with 1 key. I had the dealer throw in a new key for me (so I would have 2) and they had it programmed in less than 30 minutes for me.

I didn't find out there was only 1 key until the deal was signed and the vehicle was ready to go. I guess I just assumed there would be 2 keys...........just like any other vehicle purchase I had made in the past. Therefore, I had no negotiating power left to get a second key thrown in. Although I did hint that I wasn't happy to find out there was only 1 key available for me when I drove away.

I didnt know there was 1 key at time of purchase either. When they handed me the key, I asked about the 2nd one. The sales person talked to the manager, and they said they will give me a key on their dime. I made an appointment, and a few days later I had the 2nd key.

You got a good dealership then. My son is a Ford sales consultant and he said they really should have disclosed there was only 1 key before I made the offer. Maybe they were a little ticked that I didn't buy the extended warranty, undercoating, rust protection and wheel/rim warranty for $4000 extra.

I got mine off eBay and the dealer took another ~50$ to program it.

No issues at all.

I've been in the market for a second fob myself, after only getting one from the dealership when I bought my EX. I've been reading conflicting information about the slide-out emergency key component of the fob - sure, any locksmith can cut the key for you so it matches the one you have (if you get a fob with an uncut blank key, or purchase the uncut key separately) but I still am not 100% sure whether the EX requires the emergency key to have a transponder chip (chip 46) in it, or if a key with no chip is the way to go. Usually chipped key are for cars with a keyed ignition (not a start button), but the information online is confusing. Anybody knows if our stock fobs have chipless emergency keys, or do we need to get the proper fob with a chipped key?

(sorry about the tedious repetitions, guys - just trying to make matters clearer :P )
