I am a recent victim of intelligent key troubles while away int he countryside in Jamaica. The story goes that I went to the country and parked unknowingly between a radio transmission poll and a cell tower disguised as a palm tree. Upon trying to restart the car I got no response from either the mechanical key nor the intelligent key:( . Residence informed me that this had happen before with other model cars but they eventually worked. I had to tow the car from that area and even then the iKey and its mechanical key did not work:cry: . I had to ask someone to retrieve the spare key from home in the city. Even when I move away from the area both keys still were not recognized by the car. The spare key worked when someone brought it from home, Thank God!! . Any ideas on why and how to re-activate the Ikey and the its mechanical key insert?

You had to have it towed? There is a physical key inside the iKey fob. Did you know that?

Take it back to the dealer - they are the only ones that can reprogram the keys. While you're at it, make sure you have the updated i-keys - there was a recall on them, and the newer keys are not as susceptable to this issue.

I saw that in a post somewhere I think you may have been the one that posted it. I bought my i-Key from courtesyparts.com. I will call them and check it out. However, I think that there maybe a greater issue here as the mechanical key that accompanies the i-Key could not start the car either. I had to tow the car away from affected area (with the 2 transmission towers) then get eh spare mechanical key from home which was never in the vicinity of the towers. Then the car started and I drove home without any glitches. I am at a lost as to why the mechanical key did not ans still isn't working.

The mechanical key cannot start the car - it can only be used to open the door when the battery in the I-key is dead.

Did you put the key in the key slot on the left side of the dashboard when this happened? I know this is the way to start the car when the key battery is dead, but I'm not sure how it reacts in your situation...let me know - I'm interested to hear.

I would also go back at courtesyparts and ask them about the key issue - they may have sent you an old key.

Uh... I've used the key to start the car many many times...

Can you take a picture of where you put your mechanical key? I'd love to see it, considering any car with the push button start doesn't have a slot for a physical key.

How does the physical key not work? Unless there's a problem with your ignition it should work.

First, please realize you are in the Versa forum. We don't have push start. We have to turn the knob where a key would normally be in order to start the car with the iKey. If the iKey is not working, then there is a place in the knob to insert a key.

Also, we don't have a slot to place the iKey into to start the engine or charge it like the Altimas do if the iKey battery is dead.

No. I will not take a picture. All Versas has a twist-turn ignition.

Not sure who to reply to but i just replied to the last post. As said before my car is a versa and typically can be started with either the i-Key and the accompanying mechanical key which is inserted into the ignition as an ordinary car used to. I spoke with one of the technicians at the dealer today and hey was also bewildered and interested in the fact that the mechanical key of the i-key could not start the car. the theorized that the coding from the BCM had been erased by the radio and cell towers. But then admitted that if that was not the case then the other mechanical key which i had at home should not have been able to start the car (if the BCM had no code). My theory is that the either initial programming from the dealer was faulty or the close proximity of the towers completely wiped the coding from bout the I-Key and the inserted mechanical key. How did that happen and how likely will that happen again are my thoughts. BTW the technician also said both the I-Key and its mechanical just need to be recoded (at a cost to be of course). will keep you all informed on how it turns out. JUST AVOID THESE TOWERS!!
