Intelligent cruise control, driving into sunset

I was driving into the sunset with the intelligent cruise on. It shut off a couple of times. The owners' manual says that's normal.

The question is, why? I could see that if it was IR, it would shut off, but I understand the sensor is radar.

It will also happen during a rain storm!

It has to do with the cruise control optical pick-up. Direct sun and a lot of rain will shut it down.

Optical, not radar? Or Sonar?

Do you know what wavelength? Visual v. IR?

Just my curiosity.
