I just placed a cone intake filter on my J. First, I paid $9 for an adapter advertized on Ebay specifically for the J30, then picked up a very nice universal filter from Napa for $27. Pulling out the airbox was a snap and did indeed free up a ton of room (which is one of the reasons I did it). Be sure to retain the plastic cold air tube if you perform this mod since it will continue to funnel at least some fresh air to the cone at speed.
I didn't expect a noticible power increase, nor did I in fact feel one on the old butt dyno at first, however after driving around for a day or so, one thing I noticed was that the transmission seemed more prone to downshifting with moderate throttle inputs (which I am VERY pleased with). This may be an illusion, since I've never heard of an intake change causing such a thing, but even if it is not an illusion, I suspect it might be because the old panel filter was pretty dirty (milage seems to have increased slightly as well)
I also got a very pleasant upper RPM growl as well, which I am also very pleased with.
Lastly, the fact that the intake is now sucking in warmer air than before around town does not appear to have any noticible negative side-affect.
