As is so often the case, your friend is a moron. Be sure to relay that message. And what do you mean by "What's the deal with the MAFS?"

no you don't need to upgrade it but if you turbo it, then you'll need to upgrade :)

SeVa-S13:the message was relayed just fine. allthough the reasoning was not relayed in the origional message. There is no point in having 3" of intake pipe if your TB is 2.5" or even less because cold air being more dence than warm air is going to have to be forced through that little TB and were not dealing with forced induction here. i didnt say he would lose power but having too much turbulance in your intake WILL not add power over your stock restrictive airbox and plastic tubing. so taking in 2.5" of cold air with no restriction is going to give you a way better flow than trying to force 3" into 2.5" right before the TB. so the only way to make absolute use of having 3" Intake would be to upgrade the MAFS TB and Intake manif, but on a stock N/A motor thats overkill. the point of having an aftermarket intake is to get the most air into your Intake manif with the least ammount of struggle.my point to him was that intake alone wont give him that much power its just one piece to make a well rounded system

You reasoning is pretty sound, but you should really make sure your firends don't misquote you anymore. ;)
