Hi guys, I am new to posting in the forums, although I have been reading these boards for well over a month. Anyway, I am having a problem with my intake, and I hope you guys can help. I did a search, but I didnt find anything useful. Here's my problem: I bought a 89 240 about a month ago, it is in good shape and runs well. I am planning to do alot of mods to it, but I want the car mechanically perfect first. When I bought the car the stock intake piping was held together with duct tape. There was an obvious vacuum leak coming from here, so I decided to order an ebay short ram intake for about 25 bucks just to stop the leak. I get the intake, and of course it is missing lines. So i go to Auto Zone and buy replacement lines for the intake. I hook it all up, and I am sure I did it right, but everytime I start the car it sputters, and stalls. It sounds like it is running very lean as I have to practically floor the gas pedal to increase rpms. I tried everything, switching hoses, disconnecting battery to reset ecu, better hoses, connecting or disconnecting mafs. One thing I noticed, when I had MAFS connected, the car idled fine, but it was hitting like a rev limiter at 2500 rpm. When disconnected the car would constantly stall, but I could rev higher. Please I need this car to work in order to work, and I have no idea what else to do.

alright the kid slash escobar, im bout to drop some funky knowlege on you.your problem is probably not your intake. it sounds like a similar probelm i had with my car. it has to do with the emmision control of your car. i recomend you take it to a mechanic tell them to do a diagnostic on it, and also have them chech the idle control valve, fuel pressure regulator, o2 sensor, fuel pump, as well as the fuel filter. if your feeling confident in your mechanical ability. download the factory service manual and you can tacle these projects. but if this car is your daily driver i highly recomend that you take it to a good mechanici hope i was of some help to you and good luck

The MAFS-invoked "Safe Mode" is likely due to a poor connection, or malfunction otherwise. Also, is there a large change in interior diameter of the intake piping right before or after the MAFS? I've heard that's a common problem on eBay intakes aswell.

So I am better off installing another stock intake from a junkyard to hold me over

Not necessarily; but if you can't seem to find the problem on your own, it may be a good idea.

I'll move this to the Tech section so you can get more advice, plus it belongs there.

I learned my lesson from cheap ebay ****, never again. I just wanted an upgrade over a duct taped intake, and of course my car doesnt run now. I am going to a place tomorrow, and I am getting another stock intake. Hopefully this will solve the problem, if not then Il see a mechanic

Your car is in safety mode.....that's why it runs like that.....it's in safety mode because you have a bad MAF sensor or atleast a bad MAF connection......go get it tested or if you have a FSM and a ohm meter test it yourself.....

My Z had this same problem only it started one night while I was Ice drifting after a ice storm. Very hard to get it home that night.....and it did it every day afterwards at random unless I would put dielectric gel in the MAF sensor......then it'd work fine for a little wile. Problem solved by having a new plug sliced into the harness.
