Why would it be a bad idea (or good idea) to completely remove the piping on the air filter/intake?

Couldnt a cone filter or something similar be put on the "intake mouth" (lack of terminology) for a more direct breath?

-I have a 93 hatch

What a bland question. What do you mean remove? If you mean that restictive factory s13 bull, yes take it off and throw it away, if you have the money. You can put the cone on the throttle body if you put the Mass Airflow Meter between filter and TB. Wires have to be cut and extended, but hey, that's not hard for a rocket scientist like you.

The idea is to have the filter located somewhere to pull cold, more dense air in. Sitting right on the throttle body, you are going to pull nothing but hot air.

I also read one time not to put the MAF that close to the throttle body, but I don't remember if there was any logic behind it.

I know it's exciting when you think of some crazy plan you think no one has thought of yet, but don't try it.

yeah,, its smart but that intake pipe speeds up the air that leads into the throttle body thus creating more airflow into the TB.. dont do it, not really worth it.. just get a new filter and poke some holes in the stock airbox.. its a free 1 hp at least

plus, just like in the intake manifold runners, in the intake tube there are helmholtz waves that help add a positive pressure wave for a given rpm, its not nearly as large of an effect as the intake runners waves but it does infact exist.

so you will definately lose this extra bit of power just because you have no intake pipe. it will effectively be tuned for some ridiculous high rpm of F1 proportions...

Too much work. You don't really have to move very many wires but you will have to find a way to get all of the hoses that hook up to the intake tube the air. And plus it won't provide you with anymore performance. You could just put a cone filter on the end of the stock intake tube. That's what I did at first.
