intake manifold reduction

i've seen a lot of pictures of the ka24de engines (mostly turbo'd) with the bottom half of their intake manifold removed and replaced with aftermarket looking intake manifolds. does this really help gain more power in different rpm's? does anyone know any details on what this does performance wise and if it's ever done on n/a engines?
