I have had my 1994 Q45 for about 3 months. I took it to a mechanic to get it diagnosed for a rough idle, rough acceleration and engine surging. Here is what they gave back on the diagnosis.
"COMPLETED ALL NECESSARY TEST AND RETRIEVED CODE 34, MONITOR PID DATA AND FOUND TO BE RUNNING LEAN AT IDLE. PPT VAC LEAKS AT UPPER AND LOWER INTAKE PLENUM GASKETS, KNOCK SENSOR SPARK PLUGS AND BOOTS, W/ INTAKE JOB, ALSO REC COOLING SYSTEM HOSES LOCATED UNDER MANIFOLD WHILE OFF"
What they told me was that the intake gasket was leaking and they said one knock sensor was bad and the other one was very close to going as well and I should replace both, but they only quoted 1 replacement I think. They said because of the mileage (235k) the various hoses will be stiff and bad as well and they should also be replaced while down there.
Now here are the prices I was given -
Hose Kit (price not listed)
Knock Sensors (215.92)
Intake Gaskets (49.48)
Intake Manifold Gasket (11.40)
Parts Cleaner (7.32)
All Parts (1145.08)
Labor (950.60)
Now a couple questions here.
1. For the parts price to be that high, the unlisted price for the "hose kit" would have to be around $850. What hoses are those? Should they be that expensive? Do I even need them? Is the mechanic trying to screw me?
2. 9 Hours labor... reasonable quote?
3. Is this a job I can do myself? What hoses would I need?
Basically if I can't get this repaired a lot cheaper than $2190.15 (with tax), I'm just gonna run the car into the ground or sell it.
