So im fillin my car up with coolant after rebuildig the motor (brand new everything internally, all new gaskets everywhere, everything double-checked and torqued down to fsm tq. specs.) and all the sudden coolant is trickling down my engine, i look further into it and find out its around my intake mani. Now here's what i thinkin either i mixed up a hose somewhere, orrrrrr, and im really really hoping its not this, my intake and or head gasket is bad (even though the car has never been started yet after the rebuild so i dont know how i could have a bad gasket somewhere if they were never heated up or anything. I pulled the spark plug on cyl 1 and stuck a rag down in there and pulled it out and it was wet with coolant. So does anyone know what this is for sure? Or is there a diagram someone has of the coolant system hoses that i can go off of other than the one on the fsm? Thanks for the help - extremely frustrated right now because i was so damn close - please only post regarding to the topic.

sounds like a cracked or warped something. You could tear down and restart, hope it goes better. I will say that when doing my hg the fsm torque spec were off. I was overheating in no time, like two hours. I retorqued them a bit past fsm and had no problems till summer came around. I am not telling you to tighten past fsm, just my trials.

I think i might have some hoses mixed up because i pulled the injectors and saw coolant in the intake manifold ports. Can anyone confirm that this is the problem?

yeah if you hooked the coolant to the fuel line it would be in the injector ports and have filled the engine with coolant. Maybe you hooked up coolant to a vac hose? Check at the thermostat housing were a (coolant line come out and goes to the throttle body and intake for warming.

My guess is that your intake manifold gasket is screwed up or something to that effect. Coolant runs through part of the intake manifold as well as the throttle body.

Got a port blocked? Doesn't make sense on how it trickles otu and has been under pressure though. Take pics. Got to know where the leak is coming from....

So i narrowed it down even more and fixed the coolant lines that i got mixed up now the coolant only drips...getting close haha ...but anyways now its just dripping from the bottom of the coolant outlet on the intake mani. So im thinkin that the gasket it bad there or that since mysteriously im all the sudden missing the two long bolts that go into the intake mani on the top (longest bolts on the intake mani to the head) is preventing it from sealing correctly. Thats what im hoping for, is that going to be it? probably not haha but ill get a pic for you guys and let you guys know what happens tomorrow when i attack it again. EDIT: BTW the coolant line i had hooked up was hooked up to the nipple on the lower timing cover below the thermostat which is obviously not part of the coolant system because i drained my oil and it was nothing but oil and coolant - what a waste of 20 bucks. But anyways ill get some pics of the nipple im talking about and where the coolant is leaking for you guys tomorrow when i go back at it. Thanks for the help everyone, i really appreciate it.

those two bolts would really help you know if its the gasket or not. Be glad you dont use synthetic oil it would have been 40 bucks. Also I assume you torqued the bolts in the right order?(fsm tells you) Wait you said your missing two bolts. Hope you didn't warp the intake manifold!!! Let us know.

usually when youre building stuff up you get all excited and you forget to do things.

i think you forgot to take a razor blade to either the head or the intake manifold before you put the new gasket on. if you dont absolutely clean up both mating surfaces the gasket will leak 100% of the time.

ive done it many times, but now that i make my own gaskets, this doesnt happen anymore as its a much more time consuming task

Alright heres the updated, all the coolant lines are hooked up and i later found out that i had a coolant line hooked up to the pcv thing on the bottom of the intake mani (4 rubber hoses going to a common hardline with a nipple coming off in the center which hooks up to the breather separater). But heres the new problem, engine wont start....Ive got spark, and gas, but it just sits there and cranks away. Now ive got this wire that i couldnt figure out where it goes to but its pretty heafty but i just disreguarded it here is a pic of it....now the other problem is that im thinkin that it might not be timed right. I set cyl 1 at TDC and had everything all lined up from the crank sprocket, to the cam sprockets, to the marks on the crank pulley. Ill get a picture of that wire but if you guys have any suggestions that would be great. FYI: I took my evap canister off, and all those hardlines on the intake manifold for emissions, i blocked the egr on my exhaust mani, took those two round things off, and all that stuff. I just put a screw and rtv'ed around the screws for the holes that were left on my intake mani. So if there are any common mistakes when taking all that stuff off please suggest that because this is my first time taking the emissions stuff off. Thanks for the help once again.

P.S. The gasket problem was that the night i was putting my intake manifold on it was around 1 in the morning and i had been workin on my car all night - i forgot to scrape the old gasket off haha no excuses just a stupid *** mistake . Fixed that and no longer and leaks so im somewhat happy haha.

you sir are correct that is the knock sensor. Put it back! even if nissan only uses on a small range of engine function.

Ughhhh shiitt lol ummm well i fixed it haha...still have to put the knock sensor wire back on haha, but when i was putting my clutch/flywheel back i moved the crank a lil and couldnt get it back to tdc blah blah blah...so anyways all the leaks are fixed, and timing is set right, now ive got to put the knock sensor back on, turn the idle down (it was at 3000rpms!!!!!!), then set base timing. If anyone is familiar with setting base timing that would be great, i was reading klattrl's how to set base timing and im not too sure on exactly how to do that haha. BUUUUTTTTTT the good news is that it RUNSS!!!! and o so good!!!!!! God it was soooo worth the wait haha!

glad to see you worked out the problems. For the base timming disconnect the tps .5 - 4.xx volt signal connector and loosen the distributor. Get the timming light out and hook it up to + - and signal (number 1 spark plug wire),crank the car and shine the timing light on the crank pulley you should be around 15* second line past red. this is for a 90 sohc. IIRC left is retard and right is advance.

Hey can you tell me where that knock sensor plug go to? and do you know what the fan plugs into - because it wont turn on and my coolant is boiling over haha.
