After installing my injen I've been thinking. When do you guys think we need to replace the filter. I know for cold air intake systems you should change it frequently because of all the junk it sucks up. Our SRI will not suck as much in so we shouldn't have to change it as much... rite? Also it looks like we need to remove the whole intake to replace the filter. Is there any other way to replace the filter?

no replace, K&N recharge kit... and clean whenever dirty... every other oil change perhaps. I just slightly run my hand over the filter... if it turns up dirty it's most likely time to clean it.

You can replace it if you want, the filters are $40-some. But I wouldn't replace it unless it is damaged (i.e.: the cotton has been pulled past the screen or has a hole in it and so on...). Injen sells their own cleaning kit for about $15, and (unless you live somewhere with lots of dust) cleaning it about once every year should be fine.

I bought an additional filter in anticipation of cleaning. Washing the filter and letting it air dry and recharging can take some time. But if you have an extra filter I can just swap them out and clean the other one at my leisure.

makes sense, but you can clean it at night and it's dry by morning to re-oil and reinsert / reinstall. fairly simple process... also, if you truly wanna be anal about it you can clean it every oil change.

Tru dat but at night, I'm too beat to do anything. After work and dealing with grown up children, then coming home and dealing with real children, it takes a toll on you! Hell, I'm at the point where my wife and I have telepathy sex.. you know,..you want to, she wants to but both are too tired to do anything so you lay in bed & just think about it and go to sleep.. Gotta love getting old!

5,000 miles is a bit early for a full cleaning. I recommend inspecting it at every oil change. It really depends on where you live. If you live in a dusty/sandy area, you might need to clean it more regularly than average.

Keep in mind that these filters work better and become more efficient when they have a little bit of dirt on them. You don't want them to be too clean.

Directly off of the K&N website -

"How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible."

My last intake kit (2000 Xterra) had 60,000+ on it and had never been cleaned. Flowed like brand new.
