When putting the engine back together, this is how I do it, but this is a L-16 engine.
First, is everything clean, no old gasket material, and the head surface flat, and both exhaust and intake manifold flat? Chase the threads in the holes, and on the studs if the bolts do no go easily into the holes, and the nuts go freely on the studs. If not, fix those problems. Are the three studs on the bottom of the exhaust manifold in good shape? Much easier to fix them with the manifold out of the truck, and the intake manifold has to come out to pull the exhaust manufold, destroying the gasket if you pull it again.
Everything clean? Put the intake/exhaust gasket on the three exhaust manifold studs. Hang the exhaust manifold only on the three studs, and put the flat washers, lock washers, and nuts on, finger tight. Put in the four bolts with the thick washers that hold both manifolds, just started. Pull the thick washers away from the cylinder head, to the end of the four bolts. Carefully set the intake manifold on to the four lower bolts, holding it away from the gasket gooey stuff. When the intake manifold is setting on the four bolts, and not the washers, put the four top bolts, flat washers, and lock washers through the intake manifold into the head. Tighten the top bolts finger tight. Tighten everything evenly, you will need a universal joint on a socket to reach the bottom bolts of the intake/exhaust manifold. Tighten the bolts to 11-18 ft lbs, the nuts to 9-12 ft lbs. After the engine is run, check the bolt tightness again. Check again after a few hunderd miles.
