What is the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram air intake?

Cold Air Intakes are..I guess longer, and reach down lower away from the engine allowing more cold air to enter the engine.

Short ram is a shorter pipe intake - not as effective as the Cold Air.

So to answer it simply, length.

not always. Being longer, CAI's may have more restrictive bends in them, also many CAIs poke out into the front grill or even worse a wheel well. If you hit a deep puddle with these, water may enter the intake and your engine will hydrolock. hydrolock = need new engine.

The most effective intake device for a non turbo KA would be to cut the intake box, take out the resonator box, and drop in a K&N flat filter. Search around for cutting the intake box.

Nightkid is right iv seen the most gains on NA cars with moding the stock air box and removing all resanators and sliencers,And adding a hi-flow filter..The best intakes for Hondas (They know NA tuning) Are always airbox style intakes..Comptech,Spoon....My friends type r integra made 6whp with his modifed stock airbox with the top lid off.and picked up like 3 more with the lid on..

just be cheap and take off a y looking pipe thats off the box. intakes are retarded. people talk about the restrictive bends in the plastic but never see the maf or throttle body. just get a kn air filter.....not even worth it, ull gain maybee 2whp inbetween 45k-46k rpm.

Basically they are the same thing. The CAI will require that the intake tube access air directly from the outside of the engine bay/front end.

Some do this with a snorkel and either punch through the nose (best), inner fender wheel (better) or mount under the car (worst).

Frankly I doubt the small gains over a "ram air" type of intake are worth the effort.

I got the K&N kit and liked the results. Not the drop in.

Simply to install. Much better looking if you're into that sort of thing.

No more filters ($10-$20 a whack) and better throttle response.

MPG increased by 2 mpg. More pay back.

Also there is a small seat of the pants performance increase.

Nothing substantial but it is noticeable.
