Ive heard ALOT of talk about this but what are they? I took apart my intake to clean out all the ports and in the inner intake I noticed 4 valves that move.. Are those the 'butterflies'?

In order to use it 'correctly' you need the solenoid that is ECU controlled. May as well leave it not hooked up, or gut it and weld the shaft holes closed.

you need the solenoid hooked up, plus a vacuum tank, and two particular vacuum check/delay valves.

It does make a difference. If you don't want to do it the right way then just T it into the FPR so at least it'll do something vs nothing. Having them stuck open (unconnected) you loose a ton of bottom end response.

I need to hit hte junkyard one more time but once I do I'll have all those parts that are needed and I'll sell them as packages (just mount it yourself, and run vacuum tubing) for probably in the 15-20$ shipped range.

The old FAQ thread had a huge post from me explaining how it worked, altho I need to redo it to make more sense and also I've found one or two inaccuracies since..

I didn't notice that... either while driving or on the dyno. I have solid torque numbers even at fairly low RPM.

make sure you grab all that info out of the old FAQ. We're gonna be getting rid of it here soon

well at least when mine wasn't hooked up vs having it correct now, its a huge difference

it was a slug below 2-3k but moved fast once it got past that, now it can move from 1k up ...

When you start selling the package, let me know. I am down for sure.

I just disconnected the piece that's uses the pressure to move them open and shut. So what you're saying now is that I can just weld the butterflies shut when they're in the closed position and i'll notice a difference in my bottom end?

LOL. you'll gain bottom end, but your top end will suck a$$... don't weld them SHUT. If anything pull the whole system, or make it fuction properly

I guess you can't PM people here. Oh well... Sorry to drag this topic out longer but I searched the FAQ's and found a bit of info on this subject but not enough to really help me. I want to take advantage of these butterflies instead of just leaving them unhooked. What exactly do I need to run this, what car can I find it off, and how easy to hook it up?

PS. sorry to be a bother =(

Exactly how much does the top end suck? And are these the same type of valves like the SCV in the S13 KA24DE motor? Could you perhaps use the solenoid from that motor if I could get it off the head somehow?

if you closed the butterflies permanently you have effectively cut in half the airflow to the motor. SO I would say it sucks pretty hardcore. If anything remove them and be done with it.

you can use the actuator solenoid off some USDM car, but I don't know which one. That's Ryan and biosehnsucht's territory.

I am probably going to just remove mine. One less moving part and one less vacuum line But I could care less about low-end response. Plus, I don't think it's worth the hassle to rig it all up to work. I like simplicity.

Leave them in! I learned the hard way not to just start hacking away at things that were carefully designed by professionals. I did remove mine and always wished I left them in.
