hi everybody, im new to these forums.

i've been wanting to get a 95-98 240sx for about 2 years now but parents won't allow it because of "high insurance costs because its a sports car". I'm 18 so naturally insurance will be high but I just wanted to know if anybody could help me out here in comparing the 240 to, say, a corolla (insurance costs that is). Thanks.p.s. they also think the 240 is ugly, to which my jaw drops each time...

Call around. Comparing rates online from other people's experiences is not a direct comparison. Different things are looked at when you are quoted a premium. Things can change drastically from one region to the next. And unless you ask every question the insurance companies do, there would be no way to be certain your rates would be the same as someone else's.

It all depends on what kind of coverage you are wanting. The 240sx is not classified as a "sports car"

Supposedly, out of our families 4 cars (consisting of an '03 Town and Country, a 98 Protoege, a 96 Grand Am GT, and my 95 240) mine is the most expensive to insure. I have full coverage on it, as does every car except maybe the Grand Am. I still don't pay that much though, something like $120ish every 2 months. I am 19, but I am on my parent's insurance plan and I think within our family, the only ticket we have is 1 speeding ticket my dad got once.Note that I don't actually see the actual bill, I just get asked for money. I'm pretty sure they ask for what I owe, though :D

I pay $2600 a year, but that covers any car I get into.

My insurance would go down $80 every 6 months going from a 1996 Saturn SC2 to a 1998 240SX SE.

It depends on carrier as well. Most can quote out cars for you, progressive does.

Tell them you are looking at a whatever 240SX and a whatever whatever ;) and would like to compare the cost of insurance.

800-auto-pro I think is the number.

I pay 800 bucks every 6 months and have full coverage on my 1991 240sx. I'm also insured on any car I drive (big plus). Part of the reason is that I'm still on my parent's plan, so I get "group" and "loyalty" discounts. Oh, and I have a squeeky clean record. (Traffic school will do that for you... he he.) And the 240sx is not a "sports car" on insurance papers.

Get some quotes and compare. This will affirm if the rates will be higher and how much. Having confirmed facts always help your argument as well. Might even show you have some responsibility to do the research. Some parents love that crap.

Everything varies, even agent to agent sometimes.

Not all carriers offer good student discounts....some don't even discount for common discountable items.

I'm 25, and I pay $650 a year for liability insurance on my '92 Hatchback. That rate is through Progressive, and I get a small discount because my bike is insured through them as well.

Just an FYI - Progressive has some of the better rates out there, and they'll compare themselves to a few other major insurance companies for you. :)

Down here in Mississippi my insurance on my 98 240sx i think was 50$ more than I was paying for my 97 cavalier 3 years ago. Both were full coverage. It also has not gone up anymore. (thank the lord!)

This is VERY supprising b/c almost a year ago I got very unconservative with my driving and managed to get either 5 or 6 tickets within 6 months.

some of my favorites were,

careless driving.speeding 76/30 :rockon 4th offence speeding. 55/30

friends are bad influences, and age brings temprence so it's been a year now with no ticket. I really dont know why my insurance has not gone up... But now I get letters in the mail from the Mississippi DMV "your safety is important to us . . . continual disregard for traffic laws . . . your licence could be revoked . . . please be more conciencious." sorry I'll quit now.

:D

ok my father quickly went down to the insurance company and they quoted him (according to him) $3000 for 1 year... would this be the median price? also, he said that the lady said it WAS considered a sports car...

that's WAY too high - start calling around to other companies, because not all of them consider the 240 to be a sports car.

problemo is... my father was in a car accident about a year and a half ago (maybe a little more than that).. and it was his fault, so we can't change insurance companies he says... DAMN IT!

No offense, but I think your pops might be pulling your proverbial chain on that one. The 240sx is not a sports car. Period.

The fact is, a lot of people get thrown by the lines on the 240sx (at least on the older S13s). They look at the long hood, low profile, two doors and, well, yeah, it looks like a sports car.

3000 is definately too high. Almost any reputable insurance agency should be able to beat that.

Just on a side note: when I was living with my folks, my parents would justify almost anything with seemlingly viable rationale. "It costs too much... your insurance will go up... there's no room for it... etc. etc." Then I started looking at the facts myself and found out a lot of it was bullsh!t. It's part of the reason I moved out at 18... I couldn't stand being treated like I was ignorant. Even now, 2 1/2 years out on my own, I still feel like they're belittling be when I stop off for dinner. Grrr....

Anyway, look, check for yourself. If the price is the same, fine. That IS a lot for insurance, though. If you check it out and find out that the 240sx isn't a sports car (which it isn't) and that your insurance would be cheaper (which it should be) then maybe your 'rents are just looking for an excuse for you not to get it.

Is the vehicle titled in your name? If so, why don't you get some quotes on your own policy? Your 18, you can legally enter in to a contract (like an insurance policy). You won't be held accountable for your father's accident.

I work in the insurance industry, and I find it hard to believe that your insurance company classifies the 240SX as a high performance vehicle of any kind.

The 240SX isn't exactly cheap to insure and it *will* probably be more expensive to insure than a Toyota Celica of the same year (except for the GT's), but that doesn't mean it has to be outrageously expensive.

As others have said, rates can vary wildly from one company to another...shop around a bit.

If you are talking you and your family having different policies then yes. You may have to each get 'exemptions' on the other (neither of you will be insured if you drive each other's cars).

Other than that you should be smooth sailing.

Or you can be a listed driver that is not rated on the parent;s policy. Policies are written based on risk. Doesn't matter the car's classificatioin so much as the power to weight ratio and the weight. I'm sure there is some consideration for the type of car, but not so much the type, but rather the typical driver of that car given other criteria of the driver that will be driving that car.
