Hi, I'm new here and I'm thinking about buying a 1994 240sx. What would insurance run for an 18 yr old? That will pretty much determine whether or not I get the car:)

Thanks

Well that definitely depends on where you live...so if you tell us that, maybe we can help you. I can tell you that i am 18, live in New Jersey, and have no points on my license. My insurance is 1800 a year for only liability. But insurance in new jersey is way more expensive then anywhere else. My car is a 1990 by the way.

Yes, it would be very helpful if you could take a minute and complete your profile, so that others know where you are from.

Thanks, and welcome to NICO!!:D

Get a quote. There are plenty of websites that give online quotes. Try a few. Input what you think your profile will be when you will be insuring the car. Answer the questions for the quote accurately or it may give you an inaccurate quote.

You can also try calling a broker. Premiums for insurance vary far too widely to use others on the internet to try and determine what your rates will be. There are far too many factors.

I don't know what you would get but i am 23 and i pay 300 a year liability from state farms in Texas. It will vary depeding on several factors. Where you are located, your credit history and driving record.

I work in the insurance industry, and I highly recommend dealing with an independent insurance agent (one who sells products from many, not just one company). If the agency is a good one, they'll find the most appropriate coverage for you at the best price available. If you don't like the price you get, you can always try one of the direct writers, like Geico.

Larger agencies write with many different companies, and there could very well be significant differences in premium from one company to another. Of course, the coverage may be a bit more broad with some of the more expensive companies. You're agent should be able to help you decide what you actually need.

Lastly, it's nice to have someone act as a "buffer" between yourself and the insurance company. Insurance can be confusing, and the agent should be able to translate all that insurance stuff in to english for you. :)

Oh, and the 240SX isn't exactly cheap to insure.

Another interesting factor to consider, insurance gets lower after you have your license for a longer period of years. I have mines for 4 years and have a clean driving record and paying pretty cheap for it, don't know how much exactly but I'm using a family plan which includes my mom, 18 y/o sister, and 22 y/o brother. I think my share is only $30 a month for liability.

I pay about $150/month just for basic insurance right now on a 92 coupe. I paid $300/month for full insurance when I had a '95 240, and $230/month full on the coupe. The state of GA rates them as "high risk" vehicles, so insurance is high as hell. I'm 21 with 1 speeding ticket, and 1 improper passing ticket.

20 years old in CT, and I pay $600 a year for liability + comprehensive (glass, vandalism, theft, etc) from USAA.

I get a $60/year discount because I get good grades. Seriously there are so many little discounts like that (another $30 off a year for the automatic seatbelts...), make sure the insurance company knows ALL about you and your car.

I live in Chicago and pay about 900 a year for liability on my 92 240. I'm 21 though. I had a 91 integra too that I sold and switched the policy to the 240 recently and it was the exact same price, if you're just getting liability I don't think it matters too much what kind of car you drive, only your age :)

Reason for liability:Insurance company won't reimburse for modications and these cars can't have a very high pay-off if they get totalled.(This is what my "reserve" fund is for--play safe.)

I like the concept of independent agents myself. My work uses them to sell our products. However, they are still in the business of selling and very few actually go into detail about the available coverages and what might be best for you. It's best to make sure you educate yourself and know what to ask about. I've handled so many claims where a person bought "full coverage" and assumed they had all coverages. But there is no one defenition of "full coverage". It means different things to different people. Some may think of just Liability, comprehensive and collision to be full coverage, while others think of it as every single coverage available. But really, you should drop the concept of full coverage and look at each coverage line by line. I have a claim now where my insured was injured pretty bad and only has liability, comprehensive, and collision. The other person is uninsured, and my insured has no health insurance. It's an expensive lesson for her. But as much as you'ld like to think you may not be at fault for an accident, you may be, and even if you're not, it doesn't mean there is someone else that will be able to pay for it.

As far as the buffer comment, I honestly think very few agents have good knowledge of claims. Not that I'm bashing them, as I do not have as much knowledge of underwriting. I would prefer to speak to a claims person when asking about specific types of losses and coverage. Some agents will even call a claims department to be more informed. Unfortunately, the nature of a claim is that every situation is different so they may not be able to answer a question with absolute certainty, but it should be enough so that you can decide if you need a certain type of coverage or not. Remember, as I said above, agents are salespeople and sometimes they may give you false hopes to get you to buy a policy or coverage. Not that all do, but just be aware as you should with any sale.

what I did when I was like 17 and had my other 240, was have the insurance in my dad's name and me on it as a "secondary" driver. Since he was the primary driver, the policy was only like 80 bucks a month for full coverage. I was the only one that drove the car and was technically covered, but it looked better to the insurance company this way. This was also when I was living in Orlando. I'm 21 now and pay 80/month now for liability in Chicago which actually sucks now that I look at it :(

Who do you have your insurance through? Allstate is currently charging me $874 every 6 months for liability on my 92 coupe. Some of that is because I have an incident on my record.

Two that come to mind are Hagerty and Grundy. They might be what you're looking for. It's definitely a niche market.

my 89 240sx has cheaper insurance than my 94 altima does. By 40 dollars a month, liability only.
