Hey Guys,

So when I bought my car the insurance company I went with told me they cover all mods as long as I have receipts and pictures of it on my car. The only thing that they dont cover was rims and stereo systems, which is understandable.

But since I got the coils on I wanted to check and make sure everything was covered. So I call they say nothing is covered

So I wanted to know what other people are doing?

I'm doing what I've always done. If I've modded a car or thrown a few parts on there, I know its coming out of my pocket if things need to be replaced due to an accident. The enhancements that you make to a vehicle are your own and I think the insurance company should only be obligated to reimburse for OEM parts.

I know there are folks out there that have modded the hell out of their Altima. In that case, I think its wise to move to an insurance provider that specializes in doing so.

I honestly thought everything was covered.... For example Rob Vegans car he had the Carbon fiber hood. Did insurance cover that or did they only give you a stock hood????

Find a different company. And get everything in writing.

Libert Mutual had my G35 insured for the value of the car + mods, cost me a little more.

State Farm insured my stereo on my last car. It didn't even need a rider or anything. They told me as long as it was installed on the car (IE, not just an ipod plugged in which is completely temporary) it was covered. When my car was stolen, they definitely replaced a lot of the stereo and gave me money for what they couldn't replace. I was very pleased with how they handled it, actually.

Also, be prepared to show receipts for everything, as well as pics of each thing installed.

Insuring mods is an area that's rife with fraud - which is why most insurance companies don't do the car audio thing.

This ^ is true. I had photos of my entire install (including the in-process shots so I could justify labor) as well as all of the original receipts. Without all of those I would've been screwed.

So what if I don't have receipts? Do you think pictures of my car plus pics of install plus prices online would hold up or am I just screwed.

Screwed, unless someone will write you an "agreed value" or "stated value" policy.

Yeah I have a buddy who runs a shop so maybe I can get him to write me up quotes for everything and pass that along.

Since I have the stuff installed on the car and im not trying to gouge them, im going off the online prices. The only questionable things would be the custom headlights and exhaust but I can probably CinCity design send me over a quote for the headlights and the exhaust Ill have to go to a local shop.

I think my insurance said they'd be ok with electronic copies of payments if they specified what was being purchased. I'm pretty sure for one item I used an email invoice that had cost and items purchased listed. Assuming you didn't pay cash, there should always be some sort of trail.

My insurance company had a policy where you provide a list of your after-market mods with pictures and they would insure up to $700...period. Your post just reminded me to call them today and see if anything has changed.

I have Geico and they insure everything as long as I have receipts and pictures. Pretty sure they cover rims as well cause when I called in to tell them about the change they just asked for a receipt, which I couldn't get cause I got them off Craigslist. Their policy hasn't changed cause I just got rear-ended a few weeks ago and went into the car in front of me, and they're covering the repairs on the Stillen fascia.

I have State Farm and they covered the cost for a new OEM hood. Good thing I still had my OEM hood :dblthumb: But they also said that if my car is modded the next time something happens they will not cover the damage
